Racism/predjuce In Airlines

Fri Jun 15, 2001 4:19 pm

Hi everybody, i just read the follwoing article in worldpop.com (not a plug, just naming the source) and it seems that some airlines may be racist, stress the may be here.

So what I want to know is what airlines have you flown that have refused a famous star or have you experienced (precieved or actual) predjuce or racism at the hands of an airline...?

clearly i want this to be an informed discussion and not a flame war.

personally, ive been called an arrogant englishman by plenty of iberia staff, thats just me..anyway heres the article...

Come Fly Wit Me?
US rap star Nelly has filed a complaint against American airline TWA claiming he received poor treatment on a recent flight because he is black.

The 23 year old star, currently in the charts with Ride Wit Me, claims a flight attendant refused to give him a pillow as he sat in first class on a flight from St. Louis to Denver in the US on Saturday. Nelly says that when he got up later to look for a pillow, the pilot ordered him back to his seat and threatened him with arrest if he failed to do so. Nelly says he was warned the plane would land at the nearest airport and drop him off unless his behaviour improved. Minutes later the attendants gave Nelly two pillows.

Police officers were waiting at the gate when the plane landed in Denver. Nelly says he tried to get the pilot's name to file a complaint but police told him to leave the gate or he'd be arrested. Nelly was not questioned by police and no charges were pressed by TWA but Nelly told reporters: 'The way it escalated was a result of me being a black man.'

Nelly is busy promoting his latest project with his rap crew, St. Lunatics and their new album, Free City. Nelly's previous album, Country Grammar topped the US Billboard charts for two weeks, selling over 500,000 copies.

There are always two sides to a story and so lets hear what the airlines side to this are? I dont believe any airline employee would discriminate against someone due to their colour? There is more to this story than what we are being told? FAs story please?

Go canada, from the reports I've read from both sides and witnesses, the Nelly/TWA case is not about race at all. Its about a celebrity being treated like the rest of us and resenting it. I've seen crews scold pax for doing this very thing MAY times. Nelly took the race angle since he could. He knew it would give him publicity and also sympathy from bleeding-hearts that don't care to hear both sides of the story. It's also a good way to scare politically-correct people into a successful lawsuit. If you ask me, Nelly's actions are a disgrace to real civil-rights issues.

Well, here's an explanation -

Travelling on a regular basis as a "plain" passenger you CAN break into air rage - you're going to jail and must pay bills for the rest of your life(right so), will be blacklisted by the airline and so on

Being a star and getting involved into air rage - you get a bit of publicity and are more a star. And since you are one, you can pay the bills off your pocket money. And since you're a star...guess, the airline won't blacklist you at all, since they will get BAD publicity

Being a black star - actually, you can make fat profit from your own air rage. Just sue the airline for racism and forget you and your crew(barf) have been annoying the other pax, lambasting the f/a's and so on. Hey dudes, I'm a black star, just touch me and you'll get sued for racism. My god, you can really tell the captain to come and s**k your d**k and if he refuses, he will get sued for racism and teared off by the media.

Let's face it folks, it's not about racism, it's just another plain egomaniac who has commited another case of air rage. He deserves to be sued, go to jail and being blacklisted by the airline, just like in any other air rage case.
