How Did You Become So Interested In Airplanes?

Sat Jun 16, 2001 11:47 pm

Since most of us, if not all of us, are pretty much aviation/airline enthusiasts/photographers/collectors, how did you become so interested in planes? Was it one event that did it when you were younger? A chain of events? Curiosity that still hasn't ended?

My dad used to be a PAL pilot and flew DC-3's and I always wondered how he got to his destination amid the brutal terrain in the Philippines. He explained. I got hooked and aviation became my hobby.

What about you?

My Dad was an armourer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, so I grew up on fighter bases. Hard not to like airplanes after a childhood like that! Funny thing is, I didn't know much of anything about civilian aircraft until I got into the business. Needless to say, my boy loves airplanes too.

I was born with it. The first time I went to an airport my dad says I just stared out the window and watched planes move around.

I had never been on a commercial flight until Dec 27 1999. I had been in small cessnas and a beaver before but an experience in a cessna completely turned me off from flying and made me almost scared of it.

However, since I did take my first commercial flight about a year and a half ago I have been an enthusiast ever since. Even wanting to get going on my PPL and see where that leads me.

Funny how things work out. Scared one minute, want to do it for life the next.

My dad has his PPL. Started taking me to airshows when I was really young. Interest in commercial aviation just kinda started on its own.

Hello when I was young my parents would take me to MKE in the evening (busiest time) to watch planes but I didnt like planes as much as i do now. When I really became plane crazy was in summer of 97' my uncle (who like planes of course) took me to ORD to see a 747 and after that day I have LOVED planes since then on the busiest day of the year (day before thanksgiving) my uncle took me there again and i took a camera eventhough the pics werent great it was my first pics of planes now I go to ORD like 4-5 times a year to take pics I have at least 200-300 pics just at ORD and I also collect Herpa, and Wooster but more Herpa now I also have a subscribtion to AIRWAYS. I want to become a President, CEO, or Manager or work for grounds crew for an airline (CO) anything ill work for but just an airline, thats my goal in life. JOEY K

From when I was 5 till I was 10 we lived about half a mile from the end of RWY 16 at KPWK. Back then everything was either a "CESSNA" or a "LEARJET." Throw in my time as a kid playing the original Microsoft Flight Simulator and I was getting hooked. After moving to Arizona we lived close to KFFZ, and was continually exposed to a lot of GA traffic, plus the warbirds the CAF and Chaplin Fighter Musuem kept there. All it finally took was a subscription to Flying magazine and I was hooked, I think I was about 12. I didn't get hooked with commercial aviation till later, but deep down I still like the little ones more.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I lived 20 minutes from Schiphol Amsterdam and my dad had a dairy farm. If I was home, he'd put me to work so..........
Now (25 years later) I live almost a 100 miles from Calgary and I still have to, just go to the airport.
I still listen to ATC and track with WACARS 07.
My son (named after the B25 "Mitchell") likes militairy jets better.

I grew up next to the final approach for SFO and was used to seeing the airliners fly by all day. My dad was a bus driver for Greyhound but in 1969, when I was 10, they were on strike and my dad got a temporary job as a security guard at the Pan Am cargo facility at SFO. I went with him one night to work and got to see a 707 frieghter and a brand new 747 inside and out. From that point on, I was hooked.

Well for me it was actually my uncles fault. You see my uncle back in 1974 he tryout out the exams which if you succesed you get sponsored by the airline to pay your tuitions finish as a CPL pilot and then you start working for the same airline. My uncle try for Cyprus Airways and he did it. He past the exams coming in 3rd place. He started his studies but then the war with the Turks occur and he interupt his studies. After the end of the war Cyprus Airways decide not to continue with those kind of exams because during the word they suffered many planes loses thus being in need of money. So my uncle went again to the Uk were he finished and worked as an enginner for the Rolls planes engines. He now owns an insurance company in the Uk where he is currently being living for 20 years. So he was the reason for me being interested in planes.

I remember flying when I was 4 years old to LAX and thought that was the coolest thing. Then when I was in high school, I wanted to start an airline in Salem, OR so I tried to learn as much as I could about aviation. I started collecting timetables and reading about the history of air travel etc

My mom used to be a travel agent. This was back in the days where travel agents got plenty of perks from the airlines, such as free tickets. Because my mom got at least 2 free tickets a year, we flew alot, and I just got hooked on planes.

This sounds very weird. When I first started to be aware of the world (2 or 3 yrs old), My late grandma would sing a song with lyrics something like air-plane-air-plane-up-in-the-sky, airplane-airplane-fly-ing-so-high. This caused my first awareness of airplanes, and when on a swingset, any JT8D powered airplane, the epitome airplane sound to me, would make weird pitch changes when I would put my head back while swinging which I found to redundantly be weird (anyone else ever puzzled by that as kids?). So anyway to answer the "?", I had a dream of me walking by a major airport in place of a neighborhood park and seeing a plane a size class bigger than the An-225, seriously, with a cool V-shaped tail like that on the Beech Bonanza. I guess it had five engines on each wing. It was then that I was very eager to become an aeronautical engineer, build the plane, and make it the most successful airliner there ever was, and ever will be (obviously farfeched). Anyway, later in life I mostly have wanted to be a pilot and occasionly a musician or stormchaser. Once again, thankyou for reading the story of my life.  Big grin

When I was 9, my school was about 2 miles from LHR, on 21/1/76 our class stopped and we went to the best vantage point in the building to watch the first commercial Concorde service. It was an overcast day and we didn't see much, but the event was made by our teacher bringing in an airband radio to listen in.
He was a aviation enthusiast, the previous summer he'd arranged for the whole school to gather in front of a TV to watch the Apollo-Soyuz spaceflight.

How?
What a good question; Let's see...
A father, mechanic in Air France (meaning lots of trips)
an uncle, captain and chief pilot in Air France,
an uncle, fighter pilot in the french air force,
an uncle, KC135 pilot in the french air force,
an aunt, flight attendant,
a cousin, air traffic controller,
a brother designing sattelites (Oops!)... Embarrassment

I really wonder how I got attracted by planes?  Laugh out loud

Actually my 7th grade teacher's husband hhad tons of airways and airliners magazines, and she gave her husbands magazines to my good friend who also liked aviation. I started to read them because he would usually give them to me when he was done. That same year I took my first commercial flight and I was hooked

I grew up on military bases when I was very young. I started getting into fighters. Later on, my father quit the military and started working with small general aircraft planes. I started to get into general aviation, too, but mostly I loved military planes. Then, a few years ago, I took a trip to Japan to see my relatives. It was a long trip and I was impressed with the size and power of the airliners, seeing all those planes fly around during my layover, and seeing airport architecture, especially when I was in Kansai. That trip started my love for airliners, and after that, I lost a lot of interest for military jets.

I was imprinted by my very first image...that of an airplane...you know...like what the first thing a duckling see's fresh out of the egg. That was me. First thing I remember seeing at the ripe old age of one year, was an airplane. It taxied off...and I followed. I'm still following.

My older brother flys the F16 and I have always had model planes around the house so I learned to like them. In my family I have a brother that flys the F16, a sister that is a F/A for Northwest and another brother that is going to fly airliners just like me!

When I was little my grandfather took me onboard a Pan Am 747-100. This trip turned a little kid into an airplane/airline nut. I'm sure everyone here will recognize the aircraft I got to see.

When I was a small child I lived on a farm in Western Pennsylvania (US). I remember seeing Allegheny DC-3s and Convairs flying toward Pittsburgh. I was hooked before I ever saw my first real airlplane in August 1968. As an aside, we spent the night before my first flight at an airport hotel at Pittsburgh airport. I remember watching airplanes take off most of the night (driving my grandparents crazy) and thinking there HAD to be a ramp they were jumping off. Oh well, I was young.

It seems to me that almost everyone in here has had a mentor of some sort to introduce us to the lore of planes. There are also those who just discovered planes on their own and the interest stuck with them until adulthood. Either way we look at it we are certainly some lucky ones! What a great hobby and what an awesome interest we all have!!!

Happy flying!!!  Big thumbs up

It started with my SERIOUS fascination with space exploration when I was about 6 or 7 years old. During boring classes in school, I would draw pictures of the Saturn V in my textbooks.

Several years later, I flew my first flight from MCO to MIA. Didn't fly very high, probably 21,000 ft or so, but I was smitten.

About 4 years ago, I remember there was nothing on TV, so I decided to watch "Inside Airforce One" (or something like that) on the Discvery Channel. I had no interest in planes but there was nothing else to watch. One hour latte I was hooked for life!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy now I am taking my 12 year old cousin with me for the ride!

I lived close to Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, and at first I was afraid of planes (when I was 2 or something). Then I got kinda interested and asked my dad what kinds they were. My dad knew a bit, so he was like - ok, this is a TU-154 and this one is IL-62, and that one is Yak-40, etc, etc... Then he took me to Domodedovo to see mighty TU-114, and I was officially hooked!

By the way, I first flew when I was half a year old.

Hmm, I am not sure where I developed my interest in aviation, I have absolutely no connections with the industry, no family members work in the industry. It just sort of happened when I was 6 or 7. The only thing it could be is that my house is under downwind to NXX, and we see a lot of military traffic, but it just doesnt seem enough to spark an interest, which then brings me to "How did I get into commercial aviation"...again..I dont know, except for the last 2 years I didnt fly commercial much..its really weird...I got a friend into aviation too...too bad he moved away though...

I grew up 15 miles west of ORD right under the flight pattern for runway 9R. Plus, my brothers and I built model airlpanes for about 10 years when I was kid. Mostly 1:72 scale military and 1:144 airliners. "Wings" on The Dicovery Channel didn't do me any favors either...

I got hooked to planes when I first traveled to middle east, I waited to graduate from high school in May 93, I took my first domestic/international connection flight to middle east on delta & royal jordanian via chicago ohare.

I started reading magazines about airlines, and aviation, I ordered Conde`Nest Traveller magazine back in 1995. I was extremely excited, now I gets to fly anytime... anytime between this week and July 15 will be my 4th international flight to middle east, this time direct on Air France via Paris CDG airport, 1 hour 30 minutes layover. Flying an Airbus 343 & Airbus 320. fun flight hopes to be... Dallas Ft Worth-Paris CDG-Amman, roundtrip ...  Smile

Between 1996 & today, here I am I started everything on aviation. in 1999, someone told me about Airliners.Net, and I got more hoooooked here too... hehehehe nice plane pictures and such good things...

I studied DFW pretty well, Im glad we have couples foreign carriers at DFW, i would say 10-15 international carriers..

Alphie747,

What suburb did you live in in Chicago that was under the flight pattern for 9R. Curious to know, I'm guessing around the Berkley or Maywood area? Forest Park? Am I even close?

That 's an excellent question!!
last month, i ask my sister to buy qantas747-400 model for me, she said "you r so childish!" . to be interested in aviation is so personnel ideal. my reason is that airplne itself is so elegant when crusing up to the sky, and also shows the high-tech improvement of human brain..
