Was I On The Last 727 Mexicana Flight?

Mon Jun 18, 2001 5:12 pm

Is Mexican retiring there 727s now?
I flew from Cancun to Mexico City last week on there 727. As the plane pushed back, there were about a dozen ground crew members wearing white giving the plane a salute. The pilot was flying the plane like a fighter pilot! He made a very steep ascend and he banked hard in all the turns during the flight. Landing in Mexico City was quite scarry too.
I didn't get the reg# but the plane was nicknamed 'Nuevo Laredo'.
Anyone here have a clue?

Your aircraft was the XA-MEH. It sure wasn't the last Mexicana 727 flight, check any time table and the 727 is still the backbone of their fleet, with about 20 in service. They wouldn't even have the replacement aircraft for it, no major deliveries are planned for this year.
So the two possibilities are that either the pilot had his last flight and is retiring on that day, or that this particular aircraft was retiring, as Mexicana is slowly retiring the 727s as more A-320s and 757s arrive.
Next month I can check for you in magazines like Aviation Letter if XA-MEH is withdrawn, if not it's probably the pilots retirement.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Perhaps that 727 that you flew was the last flight.
