Pilots And Kai Tak

Wed Jun 20, 2001 12:25 am

Did airlines assign Kai Tak to a selected group of pilots only? I have always wondered this because of the skills required to land at Kai Tak. Not only the mountainous surroundings, but also the rough weather, made Kai Tak one of the most challenging airports in the world.

What about "go arounds?" Kai Tak must have been the leader in GAs. Anyone know about this?

I flew into Kai Tak on a military C-9 (DC-9-30). We had a very young cockpit crew. So I would say no, at least in 1982!

A Swissair MD-11 pilot told me that they only gave the Kai Tak route to experienced pilots, and that most other airlines did the same.

The only thing you should feel when shooting a terrorist: Recoil.
