Will SIA Be The First To Operate The A380?

Wed Jun 20, 2001 1:28 am

So goes my question...

After the recent firm deals by QF and VS to purchase the A380, and the deal signed by AF just yesterday, I wonder...
since SQ has not firmed up its deal to purchase up to 25 A380s, will they be the first to operate it, should SQ firmed up its orders later?

I thought there was a big uproar between SQ and EK as to who would actually get to operate the aircraft first. Both airlines would like the perceived "prestige". It appears that Airbus is going to alienate one of these airlines pretty bad with this plane. Just an opinion, will be interesting to see what happens.

I think they picked SQ even though Emirates Air was the first to "be interested".

I read somewhere that QF was offered first flight, but they said that they wanted they Aircraft to have some flying time beefore they operate it. Is this true ???

GOD could you imagine the fight between SIA and QF

My guess is that SQ will become the first airline to put the plane into service.

However, it will likely not be a long flight. SQ will probably put the A380 on the SIN-HKG route for a few weeks to give flight and cabin crews time to familiarize themselves with the plane, then three weeks afterwards SQ will start flying SIN-LHR with this plane. Shortly afterward, SQ will likely assign the A380 on their most profitable route: SIN-HKG-SFO (SQ 2 eastbound and SQ 1 westbound).

But I heard on the news that QF would be the first to receive it in Sydney.
Am I incorrect in saying so?

RE: Maybe Air France?

I know that Air France just ordered the A380, however their delivery dates might be some of the first. Air France is one of Airbus´s most loyal customers and has been so since Airbus started producing aircraft. One should remember that there is a lot of politics involved with the Airbus compagny and that the French have their own way of doing things. I would not be surpriced if the first A380 delivered turned out to be in the colours of Air France.

Otherwise Virgin might be a good guess together with QF, SQ and EK.

In a few years will know a lot more.

Cheers

Let's see if the bird will get off the ground first. It will, but, it almost defies logic in a way.

It's big, it's thirsty and it's gonna pose all sorts of problems (I won't bother repeating what's been posted before).

Incredible behemoth, and I'm not being disparaging about it. I'll see plenty of the monsters in SYD, SYD might well be the place to see it, cos QF will have at least 9 of its 12 there and SQ is likely to fly 1 or 2 in.

SIA will be the first.

I suspect SIN - HKG will be the first flight. Quite a shame for me personally, however, I'm sure it will be great. I'm sure the HKG people will be v. impressed (eh HKGSpotter1??  Smile/happy/getting dizzy) I'm sure it'll be fantastic.

As to EK. They will be second. Followed by QF then AF / ILFC.

Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.
