U.S. Airways Rumor....................

Wed Jun 20, 2001 3:44 am

I have read reports that U.S. Airways will sell off one of their hubs if the merger with United falls through. Any creedence to this rumor? And if they do indeed sell off one of their hubs, which one and to who?

Rumour mill:

CLT plus significant amt of airbuses parceled and sold to UA in one little package... as U withers, LGA+BOS sold as another package with Shuttle to UA... DCA+PHL assets another package to ??? PIT, who knows?

Only pure speculation.

Ok...If CLT goes, I can't really see US being able to claw its way back to the size it is now for a very long time. The Northeast can only go so far towards helping to (re)build an airline...it may be lucrative, but it won't get you much coverage and restricts you to being a niche player. And besides, Charlotte loves USAirways, and would probably make some serious concessions in terms of airport taxes etc in order to keep them there (because even if the hub is sold to another airline, doesn't mean that it will continue to be given the attention that has been given by US, although who knows).

Random speculation...

As for PIT, I see it going to AirTran eventually, along with some MD-80s.

man that would suck if US airways pulled out of here and put more crappy low-service airlines in like airtran. everybody's pulling out of here. two years ago in oct. BA flew here for the last time, and now maybe US too! not only would that leave pittsburgh possibly underserved, but would also give many local employees here the ax.  Nuts !!!

"As for PIT, I see it going to AirTran eventually..."

Huh? Even the PIT operation alone for US is much much larger than AirTran's whole existence. I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

And why in the world would US give up its largest jet hub in CLT? Especially when PIT and PHL are a mere 250 miles apart?

PIT_flyer007,

crappy airlines like Airtran?!?!?! After having a baggage problem on a recent airtran flight and having to deal with the employees in PIT i would hardley call them crappy. The staff @ PIT went above and beyond their job to get my misdirected bag back to me, and were obligated to do nothing since I was traveling as a non revenue passsenger. FL is bringing the 717 to PIT, and with it comes the superior customer service of FL, not only that but more imporatnly brought signifigently lower fares to a market dominated by the USAir fortress.

Where did you all here this rumor? It sounds pretty sketchy to me. Does anybody have a source?

PHL and PIT are really close together but then U.S. has a strong hold at both of them. Perhaps can they consolidate those 2 hubs into one?

PIT is a gold mine for US. The service reductions there are directly related to Wolfe&Co.'s attempts to push the UA/US deal through by making the company look like a financial basket case. Actually all three hubs are very strong. The main problem with PHL is delays and lack of expansion possibilities. There are no negatives whatsoever with either PIT or CLT.

US could not/would not survive without the three hubs. A strong competitor in either PIT or PHL would destroy US at the remaining hub. CLT is the only good alternative to ATL and only a fool would part with it (hence the source of the rumors perhaps).

AirTran has called the US bluff in both PIT and PHL. They are pouring their 717's into both markets and will force US at some point to either put up or pull out. Which road they choose will likely depend on how long the board continues to put with this nonsense from Wolf and Gangwal.

Go Airtran, and thanks for restoring some dignity to our market.

US will pull out of PIT on the day their last airplane flys.
As for AA taking over one of the hubs, they are going to be busy shutting down STL for a couple of years yet.  Wink/being sarcastic
