Tattooed Pilots?

Thu Jun 21, 2001 11:56 am

Would anyone feel odd if their pilot had tattoos on his or her arm? Like a full sleeve, or maybe on both arms?

But my main question is if a pilot is hired by an airline, and he or she is interviewed and wears long sleeves etc etc. Would there be any problem once the person had the job then wore a t-shirt that showed full tattoo sleeves on his or her arms?

I know some people still discriminate about stuff like that. And i'm not talking about obscene tattoos, it could be a flower garden for all they know, but does anyone think it would be a problem once hired?

Or can anyone else shed some light on the topic of tattoos and being involved in aviation?

skin art has nothing to do with professional competence.
would you mind if your pilot had a prince albert piercing?

A few years ago, I flew on UAL DTW-ORD on B737-300. The captain is about 50's. His right lower arm has tattoo. Nothing is wrong with it! He is looking sharp nice.

Many of todays pilots were in vietnam or other wars and were fighter pilots. Many of them got tattooed to show spirit to their fighter squadrin. I would think a person who has a tatoo on his or her arm from a war and flew missions. That shows you that they are the best of the best

Wouldn't bother me unless it was a tattoo of a plane going down in flames.

He could have a naked picture of Salma Hayek tattooed on his back, why should that stop him from being hired if he has the qualified amount of hours required for the airline to hire, or if he got the tattoos done after his hire in.

Don't they usually wear long sleeves anyway?

I wouldn't care if he had long hair and a beard and a beer belly and drove a Harley as long as this guy could take off and land a plane in one piece.

I work in a hotel that has alot of pilots staying in it every night and I have yet to see one that wasn't wearing a short sleeved white button up shirt. They have a uniform jacket but I rarely see them wearing it when they come in the hotel.

Unfortunately there are standards. Unfortunate for some but fortunate for others. I know some airlines have dress code that their employees have short hair (if male of course). I myself am glad that this is the case. Tattoes im not sure of, but I dont think that is a problem.

My father has a tatoo on his right arm but that didn't stop him from being hired. Anyway, even with short sleeves, it is not visible.
