32 UAL Planes Grounded At DIA

Fri Jun 22, 2001 12:11 pm

Hi,
I was just watching the news in Denver and found that United had 32 planes damaged by hail last night at DIA. The planes were grounded, but some are flying again today. There was so much rain at DEN last night that waves could be seen on the tarmac, taxiways, and runways. 4 of Frontier's planes were damaged too. The storm caused 37 United delays, and the airport passed out 3,000 blankets to stranded passengers. United says that the planes were damaged on the tail, wings, and "surfaces." I hope everyone gets to where they wanted to go last night!

Unfortunate but a reality.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

You should have been in Houston when we received three feet of water in a couple of days! IAH was shut down for 1 full day!

Unfortunatley, DIA has had many unneccesary problems such as power outages because the power lines simply get knocked together. That has closed it twice!

I think it's now 42 planes. I had no idea this storm even came through here.

Hey, any news on what types/# of types hurt? This will cost UA a lot of money to repair 32 or 42 planes. Sad news for those poor UA aircraft.  Sad

Hi,
They did not say the types of aircraft damaged. I'm sure there were 737's, 757's, 727's, 777's, 767's and 747's, but some of the damage was probably done to their smaller commuter planes. I'd say about 10 of those were damaged out of the 32. And yes, this will cost a lot. You can't just take a 777 to a body shop and have the dents buffed out!

United747-200,

Thanks for the info. You're exactly right, it's not like just taking it into a body shop, that is a lot of planes there and taking them all out of service means many cancelled flights and lots and lots of $ lost.

BTW, I like your username.  Big thumbs up

I just heard United has cancelled 84 flights today, or about 4% of all their flights. Also, they said 40% of all flights today were running late. From my local news station.

I too would be interested to know how many of what different type of airplanes were damaged, if someone can dig it up for us.

The number of planes grounded seems to keep growing. 5% of their entire fleet was damaged at DIA, and many of United Express'. The paper says some planes will be out for a couple weeks...at least.

Hi,
I know there are 744's in DEN because I recently flew one to LAX...not more than 2 weeks ago. I see maybe 2 there each time I visit.
