Why???

They'd have to pull out all their advertising that flaunted pictures of the 4-engined A340 and retract their statements about saying Boeing's B777 was "unsafe" because of the 2 engine design over long-stretches, particularly, trans Pac.

What you'd basically have is a European B777 design.

What is the point??? Please explain...  Nuts

As some airlines (SIA, HLF..) were looking for an A306/A310 replacement, Airbus proposed the A330-500 which was basically a shrink model of the A330-200. This project didn't manage to get the attention of the airlines as it was too heavy and thus not economical enough to operate: The wing of the A330s is optimized for long-haul flights while airlines are looking for a short/medium-haul 200/250 passenger-airliner.
Another proposition from Airbus was to fit an A306's wing (slightly modified) on a shrinked A330-200's body. Although this project attracted some interest from some airlines, it was not enough to launch it.
Maybe Airbus is planning some other developments of the A330 and we'll see one day an A330-500 or an A330-600. Who knows...?

The idea to add the wing of the A306 to the shriked fuselage of the A330 wasn't an airbus idea. Lufthansa brought that up since they want to replace their A310s (they will be gone soon) and their A300-600s with an up-to-date aircraft but Airbus didn't like that. And that then wouldn't be an A330 anymore but an A300NG...

I dont think it will ever happen either. The A340 is enough.
