What To Do On A Long Flight?

Wed Jun 09, 1999 11:41 am

10 things that I usally do to get my mind off the flight or just to entertain my self.

1. go to the kitchen and take as many pops as you can.

2. Draw something (I suggest planes)

3. Play ur game gear or something else..

4. MUSIC!! U MUST!

5. Talk to the person beside u and make them bored.

6. Try to sleep for abit (anyone on trans-Atlantic flights).

7. Ask to go up to the cockpit or just complain mabye u will get a better seat.. ( happend once to me)

8. Look out the window as much as u can ( I suggest day and night because its cool in night u can see the stars much better.

9. walk around the aircraft so you wont get Jet-Lag when u arrive.

10. buy a mag. at the airport so u can read and look at the pictures on the plane.. I suggest the Magazine Airliners.. its a great magazine!!!!!

I have more but these will do for now!!!

Hey Mish,

Those are all great things to do on longer flights. I have done all of them at one time or another crossing the atlantic. One experiance I will always remember though. On a night flight from YYZ-LHR in an Air Canada 767-300. We were flying off the coast of NF. I was riding in the jumpseat because I knew the pilots. Anyway, they were burning off oil at Hybernia so it lit up the whole sky. About 10 minutes later, once we were passed it, the captain shut off all the lights and CRTs in the flightdeck, so it was almost compleatly dark and the stars I saw were the brightest ever. We also saw at least 10 shooting stars in the minute or so that we were looking. It was truely amazing. Then a Flight Attendent opened the door and blinded all of us. With all the light polution in the big cities now, you hardly ever get to see the number of stars there actualy are out there. Anyway, after this I went back to my 1st class seat, watched Armageddon on the armrest TV and then went to sleep.

Well, tranatlantic flights are short hops compared to the kangaroo route. I have to make the Kangaroo route a few times usally every year, due to family busineses in europe. Its good, because Dad pays (as he is almightly director of australian operations - thinks hes second to god) and i can claim the flights on my tax. I have found, when i have a really short trip, i can't afford a days recovery time, so, after leaving singapore or hong kong, i pop a few sleeping pills, and in about 20 minutes time i am snoozing away, and wake up in time for breakfast. I normally only bother do this on the europe bound trip, and its not a good idea before singapore or hong kong, as you don't wanna fall asleep in chep lap kok, or changi and miss your connection because you are still drowsy. One of those inflatible neck cushions often do the trick to help you sleep in an economy seat. I never would have thought so, but i friend put me onto them and they seem to work. Those addicted to stimulating substances like me, (mostly toooo much coffee), it help to sleep the clouds away and when you wake up, have your hit of coffee and your back in business, and, your time zone isn't too far out. You have just woke up, and its early in the morning.

During day time, I always scan the sky for fellow fliers. Soon after UA put 777 into service, I was flying JFK-LHR when I found a UA 777 at 2 o'clock position about 3 miles ahead. Its shining new fuselage was bathed in the morning sun. It's quite a sight. Another time I was flying JFK-NRT when I noticed a UPS 747 about 2000 ft. blew us. It was dragging 4 contrails. We kept this flying formation for almost an hour. Yet another time when we were landing in NRT, a JAL 747-400 just jumpped out of the cloud and dashed away. It's like a combat situation when a boggy jumpped on you. Whew!

IF YOU HAVE TO SIT IN THE PASSENGER CABIN: Chat to the crews, eat everything they put in front of you, not sleep (might miss something), avoid conversation with neighbour at all costs, smoke (not any more, alas), walk around, avoid terrible in flight movie (with the sex scenes cut out), steal cutlery, think about stealing cute flight attendent, fill in landing card asap to feel efficient at immigration on arrival, listen to music (Gary Numan, Santana, Nick Drake, Harold Budd, Aries Project), stare for hours at wing and amazing landscapes beneath, meditate. To the above list I would definitely add spotting other planes. Saw an Air 2000 757 2,000 feet below from a Virgin 747 (we were gradually overtaking, great view), stayed in formation with a Lufthansa DC10 over Nova Scotia for hours. And a Qantas 747-300 from a commuter over the mountains near Sydney.

Take What?

Thu Jun 10, 1999 2:49 am

I bought a book last year to read on, yes that horride invention of all things - the train, called 'hot sex'. Anyway, inside, the author, whom i might add is a woman, suggest taking masturbation breaks on long flights! I have just a little bit to much respect for the aircraft to like that idea. Whats anybody else think?

Maybe UA will put Batting cages & a swimming pool with a pool level bar on its A3xx if they ever build or buy them. How about a spa or maybe they could make the front of the plane out of glass and put an observation lounge there like on the Trans-Canadian trains

LOL! I can just see it now!
Throw a good sized swiming pool in the back, big glass windows in the front...

Plane hits CAT over the atlantic, people are thrown out of the pool... meanwhile, one of the pitching machines in the batting cages falls over and shoots a fastball right out the obstrvation window, you get a rapid depresurization and scantly clad swimmers, and women who are half way through manicures in the spa are sucked out into the night, never to be seen again!

Masturbating to while away the hours on a long flight? Would never have thought of that one.

Well, that certainly is a different idea, i'll give it that. It would have to be a preaty long flight, thats all I'm going to say. Now let us never speak of this again :)

I'll tell you who would have thought of it, Lady called Tracey Cox - a promant sex and relationships writer in Australia who had a degree in psychology. Auther of a whole stack of things for womens magazines. She even goes so far as to suggest doing it under a blanket on a long boring(in her opinion - not mine)plane flight. I take it she is talking about women.

I have a better idea. have Sex with your significant other. See how many times you can do it and not get caught or raise suspicion....Join the Mile High Club. It can be a load of fun (no pun intended). And if you don't have a significant other, then find one! Make friends with someone on board!! (How about that cute girl in 24D??)

No, we really didn't get off the topic. The topic was what to do on a long flight, and my suggestion is more fun than reading those stupid inflight magazines over and over. Unless of course you're travelling alone.

I have to second that bruce - just a conversation about sex is far more interesting than some inflight magazine. certainly a lot more interesting than 'going to the kitchen and grapping as many pops as you can' - i take it that is the galley? And, raising everybody elses eyebrows when the juicy details! Yes, this is certainly a lot more interesting.

Masturbation on a long flight, bet it would not sound to bad... (for some people, not me) but I would of never thought of that one. By the way, you would want to do it under a blanket!!!!!!

Three best spots on a 744 to shag or whatever: 3: Both aft toilets......10 pts 2: Cabin Crew rest bunks up in tail.....20 pts. 1: Flight Crew rest, behind the f.deck....30pts note for #1: if you dont know the pilots add 50 pts if its one of the piolts add 1000 pts. Down here a short flight is 3 hrs. a long one is 11 hrs plus. You either get along well with the person beside you, drink youself silly and pass out, or both. Cause there is bugger all else to do at 41000'. (not including the f.deck T/O and Landing)

Whoever wrote "Hot Sex" probably knew what they were talking about re masturbation. See how many time zones you can do it in. Once when I was travelling alone I did it in three countries in four hours thanks to a lightening quick transit at Zurich (thank you Swissair). But it's more fun when you're travelling with a close personal female friend. Actually I lost my virginity to a Virgin Atlantic (yes!) flight attendent, but it was on the roof of a nightclub.

Haha, Aspen1, you've made me realise how unlikely my last post may appear. Believe me it was not even a tenth as glamourous as it sounds, and hardly a memorable experience for either party, but I have never lied on this forum. Sorry.
