the proposals are that terminal five will go ahead AND that a new runway will be built AS well.
The major airlines, especially BA have been pushing for both and they will get both.The terminal five issue will be sorted out this year, the government can now push it through parliament.In the meantime the third runway will take shape next year.terminal five is to be decided first, then the runway, the reason for doing so that agreeing both at the same time would be a political nightmare for the UK government so one will be pushed throught then the runway project will take off once the complaints about terminal five die down.
The other option which the airlines want is another runway at London Gatwick.this would be agreed if the heathrow option doesnt go ahead though according to the press and knowing uk aviation a new gatiwck runway will also be given the go-ahead.
The problem with the terminal five inquiry result is that its been oked but the inquiry said no more actual flights, this is a stupid idea.The UK government are going to raise the number of flights, since they believe that noise levels are actually reducing at heathrow.300 000 are affected by noise rather than 2.3 million 10-15 years ago.

the new runway at heathrow is expected to be used for smaller planes and short-distance flights, rather than long-haul, thereby decreasing the burden on the other runways .by stating it is for short-haul aircraft, the idea is also to counter environmental concerns since short-haul flights normally land in daytime hours and not late at night.
Britain is also looking at building a new airport at doncaster, in the north.the idea is that this new airport would grow to the size of manchester, therey creating thousands of jobs in a economic blackspot.
