Next New Vanguard Cities?

Tue Jun 26, 2001 12:37 am

Vngd4Me,

Hey! I just had a quick question to ask about Vanguard.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy BTW-Great colors on the MD-80s!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Haven't seen one at KCI yet, but hopefully I'll get an excuse to haul my parents up to the airport soon! Anyways, to the point.
If Vanguard is planning any form of expansion sometime in the next two years, what airports will the expansions be to? Will we see any Florida destinations? I'm just curious, since Southwest and Delta Express seem to have hit the jackpot on nonstop MCI-Florida flights. Well, I better go, but thanks for any help you can give me!

I think you might see NJ continue to build up the west, possibly Seattle/ Salt Lake and maybe some eas coast service to Washington adn Boston....those might be good for biz travellers but i think MidEx already flies those routes.

Any chance for CMH? MCI is badly needed from Columbus.

Vanguard already flew to FL in their past with flights to TPA, RSW, MCO and MIA in 1996. It was in the days that they (nor the traveling public) knew from week to week where their schedules might take them on a regular (daily) basis.

I think AirT85 is right about Seattle... SEA doesn't have too many direct flights to that region with the only current one being the TWA flight to STL which will be no more soon. I don't know what the SEA-KCI market is like though, but Vanguard does offer some good and inexpensive connections out of KCI.

We'll see.

As MD80s arrive I'm sure more frequency will be added to some of the existing markets as well as new cities from MCI. Sorry, I really don't know which city will be next (after RNO) but keep watching & I'm sure there will be more soon enough. As of August 12th there will be a new flight to RNO, one addt'l frequency to MDW, LAS & DEN. Still haven't seen the Burgundy tail MD87. Hoping to see it soon.

737-200s are here for a while but seem to be slowly being phased out, now 10 737s and 3 MD80s. I doubt the 737s will be gone too soon, only the newest ones are left. The MD80s are a very nice plane though; business class, even more legroom in coach & business, and they're newer and more fuel efficient.

Look for expansion to Florida down the road. We'll have an all-MD-80/87 fleet within a year or so hopefully. The 73's are work horses, but mx costs are high and they are becoming increasingly inefficient to operate. They do their job for now though.

I assume you mean TWA will be "no more soon." The flight will still be there under the American brand.

Awesome! I can't wait until Vanguard starts getting a larger fleet of aircraft! If things go well I look forward to seeing an increasingly large MD-80 fleet for my hometown airline!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy What color will the next MD-80 (after the burgandy aircraft) be? Or has that been decided yet? I think we're looking at an airline that's getting better and better just as the MONTH's go by, not years. GO VANGUARD!!!!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The next one is said to be a "kelly green" color arriving in early August. Another MD82 I believe. Followed by another around Labor Day... I don't know yet about the color of that one.

I was parked at LGA next to the first Vanguard MD-80 a couple of weeks ago - I'd call it indigo (or navy). I didn't look as good as the burgundy one pictured above.

I think it is a great idea. Kudo's to the designer of the livery.

OK, maybe my memory isn't that good Big grin. I think it was the lighter blue pictured above. The lower one looks black, and I don't think it was that one.

Does Vanguard plan on getting any Boeing 717-200 aircraft in the near future... The 717 is the aircraft everyone will want to fly... I hear Vanguard MD80s are being leased. So eventually they will have to give them back. So will they order the 717 in its place..

I wouldn't count on 717s in the very near future. The MD80s are much newer and cost effective than the 737s and are a good choice from MCI. I could see 717s at some point in the future but don't count on it too soon. The MD80s are a few years old but are in great shape and should last a while.

FLL wouldn't be a bad choice, not sure where your info comes from but we haven't heard that around here yet.

What are they trying to do? Something like Spirit Airlines where each plane is painted different?

All the planes at Spirit are painted the same...except the 10th anniversary one.

Do you mean Western Pacific, Frontier (tails), Brannif???? The all have different color scheme.

They all have the same style just different color tails. I personally (IMHO) think they look great. Different colors, unique style and still commonality to have the "brand recognition."

I think Spirit does have a few different style liveries & tails but I personally like this better because they are all the same livery but in different colors.

It's good to see someone do a varied-colors livery again. Braniff a/c were always a treat to see. Vngd4me, have you heard what other colors will be offered? I'd like to see navy blue; pine green; sky blue; bright scarlet; and gold.

Judging from Vanguard's route map, I'd say that IAH and IAD would be important next additions. Southwest only has two nonstops to HOU and a slew of one-stops; there's no low-fare competition at all to IAD. Also Boston. If Vanguard can tolerate LaGuardia's congestion, they could take Logan's.

More importantly, Vanguard should be aggressively chasing market share on the routes it already flies, and get its frequencies up to at least three or four flights a day on more routes. That would give them an important marketing advantage over MidEx, which only has two flights a day on most MCI routes.

How is Vanguard doing on routes where they compete with Southwest? WN has 13-15 daily flights to MDW, and 6 to LAS. Vanguard has only two to MDW and one to LAS.

Haven't heard the next colors after the green one. I heard a rumor of one being purple in the near future but we'll have to wait & see I guess.

I would place my bets on Boston before Houston but both seem like possible options.

To answer 2 questions at once it seems that MDW & LAS flights are both usually fairly full. As far as additional frequencies in each of those, check out the August 12 schedule, there will be a 3rd to MDW a 2nd to LAS and a 4th to DEN.

I was going to say, Houston, and Boston both seemed like very real possibilities. All though I'm not an insider like Vngd4me, I do keep up with my hometown airline as much as possible!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy I think purple would look excellent in the new scheme, as well as gold, what about silver or copper? I'm pleased with what I've seen so far, although I don't like the sky blue one quite as much as the black or burgundy. I can't wait to see a Vanguard hub hour at Terminal B at KCI, with all the MD-80 tails lined up.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy That would make an excellent photograph. Last time I was there I got a picture of all the Vanguard gates filled with the 732s, except a Delta MD-80 was blocking any chance I would've had to get at least one whole plane. :-( But hey, I got the tails at least.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Vanguard's Mad Dogs are leased from Pegasus Leasing, who have also made and investment in the airline. So I think Vanguard may stick around for a while. Where are they getting the MD-87s from? Are they the ex-Reno Air ones AA returned earlier this year?
