Currently, there's no aircraft that can fly non-stop between Singapore and North America.

However, when SIA receives it's first A340-500 in 2002/03, they'll be the first airline to operate non-stop LAX/SFO-SIN, which takes about 17 hrs.

Well, technically, Hawaii is part of North America ain't it? I think a 747 would take about 10 hours or so to reach there.

Talking about those A340-500s, they would take 17 hours to reach LAX from SIN. Currently, SIN-NRT is 6.5 hours, 1h10min transit, and 11h NRT-LAX. THat's 18h. I would rather have a transit stop than fly non-stop for 17 hours. I would just DIE

Docpepz,

I think the SQ A340-500's may be equipped with more premium seating than normal to cater to the limited US West Coast-Singapore non-stop market.

It's likely that SQ may continue the SIN-HKG-SFO and SIN-TPE-LAX routings, but will likely drop SIN-ICN-SFO. The reason? HKG-SFO and TPE-LAX has a very large amount of origin and destination (O & D) traffic given the large ethnic Chinese communities in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Basin areas.

For business, nothing beats a nonstop. These flights will be very popular--and very expensive.

Yes I understand that it is long but have you ever flown
Hongkong (3hour from SIN) direct to Toronto (14h+) direct...?
Im sure Singapore Toronto could be achieve or Singapore Calgary passing thru north routes?
Just wondering here?
coz if Cathay can achieve with A340-300 hkg-yyz
why not SIN-YYZ? would you say that this
3h+ difference between SIN and HKG is making
a difference to achieve SIN-YYZ direct?
well just a tough  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In fact, they will be fitted solely with First and Raffles Class (or so Australian Aviation magazine and some other sources claim).
