McDonalds Missing, Pizza Hut Present In Euro Apts?

Wed Jun 27, 2001 2:31 pm

The following is an excerpt from an EMail sent to me from my mother. She went to Hartford, CT, then to Kiev, then to Malta. She had to go through Italy to get to Malta, and of the three non-US airports she says (exact quote):

"EVERY airport I have been in has Pizza Hut. I'm not so
sure about the globalization of English, but the globalization of Pizza Hut is a done deal. Surprisingly, they do not all have McDonald's. AND NOBODY HAS
UNSWEETENED ICED TEA. GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! I'm sitting here drinking mineral water now, trying to turn into a European, and I don't think it's working."

And those of you who think she means anything by "turn into a European", she's being sarcastic.

Go to CPH!! Both McDonalds and Burger King are present - and you can get all the unsweeted Ice Tea you´d like. Apart from that I can´t see the importance of McDonalds and the others at airports. Normally I´d say that not that many travellers use these restaurants. At least that is the case in CPH. People are more into shopping than eating. Of course it is lovely to have a wide choice of restaurants and bars but if no McDonalds is among them it won´t make my day better or worse.

TR, you're right about McDonalds not being an essential! My first job, as a 15 year old, was at the McDonalds in O'Hare International's international terminal, and I promise you that was the busiest McDonalds I have ever seen. Not just for that fact, but because of other restaurants in that food court, I would definitely say that food takes priority with people passing through airports. Why? When you travel, especially internationally, you wanna' eat, especially if the airline food wasn't that great. You need food to keep going, but all the other things that you can get in the "duty free" shops are far less than necessary to your survival. I often ask myself, who goes to the airport to buy a watch, a shirt, a ball?

I would like to see Subways, Blimpies, and Wendy's become more prominant at airports. Healthier choices for fast food consumers.

Subway and Blimpie's I understand, but how is Wendy's any healthier than a McDonald's or a Pizza Hut?

OA412 is right... Wendy's doesn't exactly fit the description of healthier. To be honest, McDonald's is the healthiest of the three because it's burgers are so small. I personally prefer Subway over the whole bunch of 'em, but of McDs, King, or Wendys, I'll take BurgerKing. They just taste better. Wendy's is the polar opposite, fowl beyond compare. But yeah, Subway would be great!

Few Mc Donald's in European airport.........
I don't think so.All large north european airport have a Mc Donald's.
Probably if you talk about south Europe (Italy, Spain, Malta, Greece) that's it's true. There people still have different food tradition.
But Pizza it's everywhere.

In Italy there aren't Pizzahut, not only in the airport but in the city too.
There are others shops for pizza.

I'm Italian and I say that Pizzahut pizza for Italian taste it's horrible.... they don't use real mozzarella and they bake pizza with not using real fire.
Sorry for you, but I hope Pizzahut will never come here Smile

I wonder why an Italian person wouldn't like Pizzahut?! I took cooking lessons for quite a while from a professional chef and have eaten some d*mn good food in my day. Fast food of any kind just doesn't cut it. Pizzahut's pizza just doesn't compare to anything cooked at home. For some reason when I make a pizza - including the dough and sauce/toppings, it always comes out a LOT less greasy than Pizza Hut jobs. Where's the grease in pizza? When you make the dough sometimes you put some oil on to keep it moist, but dough - sauce - toppings - where's the oil come from? I hate getting a pizza and having to use a napkin to swab up the POOLs of grease on it. Ugh. That's American cuisine for ya'. Oops. ANYWAY, you don't see too much Kraft American Processed Cheese Food in Paris either...

The best airport food shop is by far Pret a Manger.

There is one in Terminal 4 LHR and it serves the nicest food - sandwiches made on the day, fresh juices, croissants etc.

It's a chain as well....

Wendy's actually does offer some healthy choices, they have quite a few and the other fast food places have been playing catch up. They used to have a salad bar, their grilled chicken is fairly healthy, plain baked potatoes, they have a large selection of pre-packed salads, and they have those pita things... don't know if they still have em or not.

Airblue... as an American I can tell you that most of us think Pizzahut is crappy pizza.

747-600X: You must really love aviation to take your first job at McDonald's at O'Hare. Maybe I need to take back all those nice things I told you a few days ago...  Wink/being sarcastic.

But not every airport in America has a MickeyDee's in it. PHX has Burger King, PDX has Wendy's, I think IAH has Wendy's... DFW does have McDonald's, but also has a few TGI Fridays on the concourse.

As far as airport dining experiences go I have to say that Terminal 4 at PHX, since I haven't been in the other 2 terminals in years, has a good selection of restaraunts. The large food court on the 3rd level of the terminal has BK, Paradise Bakery, Cinnabon, and Starbucks. On the concourses there are a few Jose Cuervo Tequiliria's, a couple of places that have healtier fare like sandwiches and wraps, and there is a Nathan's Hot Dog stand over on the C concourse, by gate C18 I think. But I think it is important to have a good variety of restaraunts in the airport. Especially if you are traveling all day long and you don't always get the food you want in the amount you want on the plane. So having a place to sit down and eat a meal when you have 2 hour layover is great to have IMHO.

I agree with Eg777er. Pret a Manger is fantastic, if a little pricey! Only fresh, organic ingredients are used, and the sandwiches are just awesome!

sandwhiches less than a week old in England? Can't be  Smile

AFAIK Schiphol does not have a McD in the departure area, though there are several on or near the airport (including one of the spotter enclosures).

There used to be Burgerking and Pizzahut outside security, but both of them burned down earlier this year (cause unknown, though an serial arsenist has been arrested for trying to set fire to the lavatories less than 50 meters away).

As to why having fastfood chains in the departure area is a good thing (mind, we do not have them...): it keeps prices down. McD charges the same price in all their stores/restaurants, so their presence alone would force other places to lower their ridiculously high ($4 for a small glass of orange juice) prices.

My advise is:
Try European food when you are in Europe!

I always like to try the traditional local food in the countries that I visit. I'm a Norwegian and I NEVER EVER go to a Scandinavian restaurant when i'm abroad.

If you want to go to the largest Mc Donald's in europe you should go to terminal 2 of Frankfurt/Main (FRA). There is also a "McD" in terminal 1. But it is true that we don't have too many other american fast-food resturants. Burger King and KFC are also in Germany but that should be it already. But on the other hand: What does the US offer the europeans going to the States? If you want to get German "Schwarzbrot" then you've got a problem... Well no problem with me! I love to gain some weight while I'm over the ocean...

It will depend from airport to airport.

And the fact that she has to adapt to the local habbits is perfectly normal !
She is in a European country , not in the US , there will be some differences offcourse. If she goes to China or Japan or Africa there will be some other things different again ! There will be already a big difference between Eastern Europe, Western Europe or between countries in the South of Europe against those in the North.

If I go abroad I try to try as much as possible of the local food and drinks. In Italy that is no problem ( Russia will be something else ... ) They have lot of fine food and drinks in Italy. One of the reasons is the fact that I noticed that if you tasted something local and you try it out somewhere else it doesn't taste that good at all. For example pasta in Italy is something completely different then at home in Belgium, the same goes for burgers in the US and here in Belgium ... Maybe our burgers aren't as good as yours but there are a lot of Belgian specialities that you hardly can't find in the US. Allways remember there is only one original, all the rest are copies !!
I would say, enjoy Europe in the European way, US in the US way ... Don't try too much 'fixing' it , it will not work. There are to many differences in the way of live, work, eat ...
That is way I like traveling so much, all those different cultures ... otherwise our world would be boring if everybody was acting the same way and eating the same kind of food ...

I live in the NYC area (NJ) and we can get real NY style pizza at every shopping center, I wish EWR, LGA or JFK had a real NY style pizzaria. I don't like Pizza hut but some of the thin crust pizzas are ok.

Getting back to Wendy's they have terrific salads that are really fresh, their chicken sandwiches are second to none (especially my favorite the spicy chicken combo #6),and their chili is healthy and very tasty. Their baked patato is very healthy (without butter), and their 99 cent menu is a bargin. For 99 cents you can get a regular or ceasar side salad and they're pretty big and many other 99 cent items like 5 chicken nuggets.

EWR has a Nathans which serves hot dogs, burgers and chicken and it's pretty good. But it doesn't serve Arthur treaches fish and chips which alot of other Nathan' I go to have.

Again I would love a Blimpie or a Subway, there are none near where I live so I only eat there when Im on vacation or in the City.

Sadly McDonalds are at UK airports, not that I've been to LGW in a long time. You can smell the stale fat before you see the actual outlet.
They are bloody everwhere...like something out of the film 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' isn't it?

I say the British are very lucky! You guys have Taco Bell! I really miss that place. Here in Switzerland all you have is McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and possibly KFC, not sure though. I'd love to see Carl's Jr. or In-n-Out Burger here in Europe, they make the best burgers! I love the Superstar! I hope something like this will be added during the 5th expansion stage of Zurich Airport. Talking about this good food makes me hungry!

Jwenting, McDonald's does have an outlet in the departure lounge. As you stated correctly the other one is next to a runway.

As for the fire at the Burger King, this was caused by an frying machine and staff who didn't understand that if the frying machines makes noises it shouldn't you should turn it off and not go on with your job and wait it to blow.

If I'm not mistaken, there's also a Pizza Hut next to the Panorama terrace at AMS.

Is there anybody here from Sweden?
Last year I was in Uppsala and I ate at "Max" and they had the best burgers around! I would fly up there just for those burgers, they are really worth it!
Is there any "Max" at Arlanda or somewhere besides Sweden? I wish they would come to either FRA or DUS.

Max

Duesseldorf needs some new fast food restaurants! There is no McDonalds, no Burger King and no Pizza Hut! Only "Burgair World" and that is not the best fast food restaurant...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Surprisingly Larnaca Airport where lots of tourists pass through has only one restaurant "Sbarro" (pizza).
Vancouver Airport has Burger King and some tasty sushi, Tim Horton's.

At AMS the Pizza Hut by the terrace is gone.
The McDonalds is located in the departure hall after passport check for non schengen/long haul.
