Who Killed Qantas NZ (aka Tasman Pacific AL Of NZ)

Fri Jun 29, 2001 5:00 am

That's the question I'm asking.

I never heard that they have any problems during Ansett New Zealand's era. But they went into serious financial problems when they became Qantas New Zealand (and of course, they shut down).

So who killed Qantas NZ (aka Tasman Pacific Airlines of NZ Limited)? Qantas or Ansett? And what's the main problem?

They killed themselves, by not running the airline probably and staying on routes that were non-profitable!!

Mikey's right.

Basically, they started up competition as a full service airline, competing with Air New Zealand, which at that stage had complete dominance and a monopoly of the domestic NZ market.
They had hot meals, jetbridges, the works. They started haemorrhaging money right from the get go, had about 2 years profitability 6 years later, started losing money again, then went belly-up owing about 60 million or something.

If they'd concentrated on being a budget low-fares airline, servicing the main trunk routes, they probably woulda been ok. But they went all-out, weren't good enough at it, and died as a consequence.

Hey now.
Dont forget that Qantas New Zealand had NO diplomatic relations whatsoever with Qantas Airways of Australia - however Qantas granted them the trademark. There is no real relationship between them.
