How can you tell the difference on site between a 717 and DC9?

DC-9 = pointy tailcone
717 = square tailcone (like the MD-90)

The engines are also distinct; the 717 has clean-cut engines with no visible reverser buckets on the ends. (One piece cowling). The DC-9 has much longer, thinner, engines with the hinges for the reverser buckets clearly visible.

The tail-fin on the 717 extends further up from the horizontal stabilizer.

The 717 had much bulkier and more modern looking engines. Notice in the photos below.

I you see a DC-9 that is taking off without any noise then you can be sure it's a B717...

I heard from a pilot friend of mine that the 717 is quite the rocket.

It is quite a rocket. But it is a QUIET Rocket. When I flew on that baby (717), she was so quiet, I could talk to the guy 5 rows ahead of me without yelling. On a DC9, You have to SCREAM just to talk to your neighbor. When he said it is quite a rocket, he meant for speed. She sure does go fast. Those Engines have the quietest thrust reversers I have ever heard. BTW -- in a few years, the thrust reversers will be visible due to all of the oil that collects on the nacelle. It will outline the Bucket Shells. But right now, the BR715 (which is very overpowering the OVERPOWERED 717) are the cleanest engines available

DC9 engine -- 14,000 lbs of thrust each -- 57 ton A/C
717 engine -- 18,500 lbs of thrust each -- 57 ton A/C

The 717 is 4,500 pounds more overpowered. When you takeoff, you sure can feel that extra oomph, It pushes you back in your seat as if the F/A SLAMMED you down.

I sure do love the 717

OK, now I will have to pay more attention. I have flown the NW DC9s are those things are just LOUD. Does Airtran have DC9s also or just 717s?

AirTran currently operates 34 DC9s and 22 717s, and soon to be gone, 4 737-200s.

717's are awesome. I agree with Critter592, you can feel that extra power. I flew in two of AirTran's 717's. They are a very good airline by the way.

If you think the 717 is overpowered, try riding the MD90 someday. 28000 lb of thrust for a MTOW of around 170,000lb! Wow!

I agree that the 717 is powerful. I've only seen one, an AirTran taking off from MSP and was amazed by its climb rate. I like those planes.
