AIRBUS MAKES EMERGENCY LANDING AT PENANG AIRPORT
The Star Daily Malaysian English Newspaper, Tues July 3
PENANG: A false smoke alarm caused a Singapore Airlines Airbus carrying 163 passengers and 12 crew to make an emergency landing at the Penang International Airport on Saturday.
A Singapore Airlines spokesman said yesterday inspection of the aircraft bound for Kolkata from Singapore showed that it was a "false indication".
He said the pilot discharged the fire extinguisher after noticing the smoke warning in the cargo compartment.
"Passengers resumed their journey on another aircraft," he said.
The spokesman said the first aircraft was flown back to Singapore after engineers inspected and replaced the fire extinguisher.
It is learned that the passengers stayed overnight at a hotel and continued their journey at 11.30am the following day.
State Department of Civil Aviation manager Ooi Chuan Leong said the pilot of SQ416 contacted the Air Trafiic Control Centre in Subang after noticing the smoke warning.
"The pilot was directed to land in Penang and we declared state of emergency to mobilise fire and rescue work at 10.38pm," he said
He said four engines were rushed to the runway when the plane landed at 11.04pm.
He said the emergency situation was lifted at 11.54pm after all the passengers had disembarked and the cargo offloaded.
The aircraft returned to Singapore at 3.16am, he said.
The department was investigating the incident and a report would be soon submitted to its headquarters soon.
although it doesn't say its a/c type, it is believed to be an A310-300 according to SQ's latest timetable which I had. I believe this is the second time SQ does an emergency landing at PEN, can someone tell me more about another emergency landing made by SQ several years ago in PEN?
