The following aircraft have arrived or will arrive today at CLK for CX to use during their pilot troubles.

CA 772

There could also be more problems now as a Typhoon is trying to hit Hong Kong !!!

That means we won't see anything special during their strike apart from the SZ A340s. I've seen one of them in Garuda wording and logo anyway.

Do you think CX will lease more aircraft during the strike? Last time they had World, Royal and Canadian. Why do they lease all-Chinese airliners this time?

G´Day mate,

So far today there have been a lot of delays. A couple of the chartered aircraft due last didn't land or won't land till today. This includes one of the China Southest A340s and a 757.

HKGSpotter, you forgot the MU A300 in your list.

At the moment, CX725 has been assigned to be flown by Southwest A340 B2390 and a Manila flight later in the day by China Northwest A300 B2330.

The CX lease mainland China's flight beacause the CX pilots are doing soemthing 'good', to make sure tha planes are always in best safety situation! So this cause the plane delay and do not land during poor weather. CX flyboy, is it mean that in the past, you do not concern about safety? To ensure normal flights, CX lease some plane to carry passengers. I want to know, why the CX do not lease planes from other Oneworld members.

CX leased planes from Chinese airlines because they were cheap. Their safety record and low levels of service do not seem to matter to the management. Actually I am surprised that Cathay chartered so many Chinese airlines. Hopefully the passengers complain, as I believe that if you pay for an expensive ticket, you should get to fly on a safe airline with good inflight service. If Cathay cared for their employees more, service would be even better, and we would try our best to get passengers to their destinations with a smile!!

Cathay has always been safe. Do not suggest that they have not been. Our record speaks for itself. You must understand that safety is not the most important to managers. Only profits are important. You see, if our planes crash all the time, our passengers will not come anymore, and profits will decrease. There are many many more safety devices which the airline could install to make an aircraft safer, but it would be too expensive and profits would be lower. This is why. It is all profits.
For us, there has always been pressure to try and take-off on time, or try and land on time. We do not break any rules, but if the company procedures say we can do it, then we will try. We will try and land in a typhoon as long as the procedures say we can try. It would be safer not to try, of course, but in the past we would try. Now we are being extra safe. If passengers are angry that their flights are being disrupted because we are too safe then parhaps they should go and fly a Russian airline, or China Airlines.

If you are a passenger pay high fees for CX flight. And when you arrived the gate, you saw a China Northern A300-600R. What do you feel?
If I am a passenger on a CX A300-600R(yes, CX not CJ). I will not get on board and I will ask the ground staff why we need to take the risk. I know, air travel is not 100% safe. Even SQ will be crashed. But if you fly on a safer airlines like CX,QF,BA,BR,KA, you will fly more confident. You will not worry about it will crash you are taking your lunch. Last time, when I fly into HKG on KA in bad weather, the captain told me(I was in the flight deck) if in case there is some accident, how you can leave the plane. But I said I have confident to you and KA, becasue the past record show me.
Yes, CA is a safe airlines, but CJ,MU,WH and SZ are not. I think every pilots want to land the planes in safe, but I think Chinese airlines pilots will take risk to land in bad weather(I saw too many dangous landing of those Chinese airlines in HKG).
I think why HK people like to fly CX even their tkt are more expensive.Because it is safe. So, CX PLEASE lease some safer airlines. I don't when to heard a Cathay A300 or B757 crashed

>>Why do they lease all-Chinese airliners this time?<<

I don't know when the last strike was, but could it have something to do with the fact that this is now a chinese airline, and not a british one anymore? Therefore the gov't might put pressure on them to use other chinese airlines to fly for them.

um.. I think you can choose either take the chinese flight or change to another airline. And CX said if passagers are not satisfy with the chinese airlines after the flight, passagers can get refund.

I think it settled all the problem!

This is a very simple theory. If I paid higher fares to fly on CX, and when I arrived at the gate to find out it is a Chinese A300 or even A340, I will just not step on the plane period. You have the choice, it is your life, you decide how to run it so don't criticize them for leasing these other airliners. If you don't feel comfortable, DON'T STEP ON THE PLANE.

Oh my gosh, SZ! I never knew they had A340's. I flew on their B733 from Chongqing to HK on Thursday, landed in a signal 8. It had no life jackets. Your life jacket is the seat cushion according to the safety card. That would be impractical if you had to swim through the door. My dad had a wrong safety card, of that of a 738! Service and food was OK though.

I hope the safety features of the 757 and 340's would be better.

I will be flying CX LHR to HKG on the 13th. Do you think I need to make alternative arrangements or will the strike be over by then? Any idea?

Lowfairer : CX's last strike is in 1999, but CX is still very British, so the lease of the Chinese planes are not due to Gov pressure, but even if CX is chinese owned, I don't think that the gov will pressure them to lease Chinese planes because if the gov does that, they would be interfering the market and the media surely wouldn't miss the chance to make outstanding stories and critizism about it.

I think CX leased Chinese planes largely because it is convenient and that there is generally an over-capacity issue in China.

Pacific: Well it does feel less comfortable to know that there is no life Jacket in the aircraft, but if I remember correctly, many 737s, even the ones outside China, doen't have life Jackets. They also use the seat cushions in emergency. But I am not too sure, I only have a slight memory of reading about seat cushions in the safety cards on a United 737.

best wishes
