Emirates Flight Makes Emergency Landing

Jul 5, 2001

An Emirates flight from Bangkok bound for Dubai made an emergency landing at Begumpet Airport at Hyderabad in the early hours of this morning following an engine problem.

The Boeing 777, overflying Indian territory, had to be diverted to Hyderabad for an emergency landing following the technical snag, the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted airport officials as saying.

None of the 350 passengers on board the aircraft was injured, according to the PTI.

In fact as soon as the concerned B777-300 landed at DXB, it was withdrawn from service. It was scheduled to operate the two daily Karachi flights. Instead Emirates ended up substituting two 777-200s on the flights (one a low density and the other a high density). It still didn't cover for the stranded pax, hence they laid on an extra flight later that evening operated by a A310-300 (high density).

According to the operations schedules, the aircraft will remain out of service for the rest of the week. Instead, they will substitute a combination of B777-200s and A330s on flights to Karachi and Jeddah. In fact to JED they are having to do extra flights to make up for the lost capacity as they don't have another sufficiently large acft.

Sounds like they are having to do a lot to make up for the lost 777- any details on what went wrong other than just- it had an engine problem?

Emirates777, do you know if it`s the same 773 that had that rather dramatic incident in Melbourne?

Anyway, thanks for adding that info  Smile

It is not the same acft that got affected in MEL. The one in MEL was a low density 777-300 (A6-EMM).

The one affected here is a high density 777-300. Emirates have two such planes in their fleet, so its one of A6-EMN or A6-EMP. The latter was only delivered at the end of March this year.

I don't have any more details - just going by what's in the press.

At least they can put the "spare" A330-200 they have to work.

I wonder if the engine problem is the one relating to the special coating used on the titanium fan blades on versions of the RR Trent 800 series.

I got an update on this...

Apparently the acft is stranded at Hyderabad, and needs an engine change there.

Some of the passengers were transferred onto Emirates regular flights out of HYD that day. Incidenatally, EK only commenced flying to HYD earlier this week !

An extra A330 and A310 were flown in to pickup the remaining pax. They also brought in EK engineeing and maintenance staff to sort out the problem.

I'm actually booked on this flight in October. Interested to hear that it's actually a 777-300 (Only flown on 200's so far).
If an engine change is required it must be a serious problem, are we sure this info is correct ?

Regards.

I would look for an AN-124 to be landing in HYD
sometime this week. That is the only aircraft big
enough to carry a R-R Trent with the fan attached.
Any further news on the engine???? Must be pretty
serious as it sounds like its a fairly new aircraft.

Not bashing any of you RR- fans, but EK has had two incidents with the Trent 800 in a rather short period of time....
A spare will need to be flown in on a AN-124, as GARUDAROD already pointed out, if necessary.

Actually its the third serious RR engine incident on Emirates. Aside from these two recent ones, a B777-200 suffered an inflight engine shutdown on a flight from DXB-MLE in 1997.

It seems that Emirates and Singapore Airlines seem to be unhappy with the Trent 777s. EK Incidents + More and SIA ETOPS issues. Not a good combination for RR. Naughty!

Is this the Hydrebad in Pakistan or India (I think India has 2 Haidrabads)

Are EK 777s ETOPS certified?
Do you think this will have any affects on EK`s ETOPS operations ? ( If they operate ETOPS routes, which I think they do )

Ambasaid: No

All 777s are ETOPS certified or they wouldn't fly.

Well at least everything was good.

ANyone know which of the 3 Hyderabads it landed at?

From Justplane.com:

Flight CZ3103, a Boeing 777 en route from Guangzhou to Beijing, was forced to return to Guangzhou for an emergency landing yesterday (05Jul) after the crew reported a problem with the nº2 engine.
The problem occurred about 20 minutes after takeoff and the crew dumped fuel before landing.

Are they also RR powered?

Singapore_air,

Don't pass comments about an airlines operational procedures if you are not in a position to confirm your statements, i.e. "SIA ETOPS issues".

FYI, most but not all B777's are ETOPS certified, and believe it or not, even the ones without the certification can fly!

Gaut,
GE90's. Not sure if they are -76's or -90's.

Anyone said that an AN-124 is required to carry the RR engine? What engine was MAS'? But they used a B744 Combi to transport an engine for replacement from KUL-PER but it costed AUD12m for one of those engines! I believe MAS uses PW engines rite?

rite, thanx Rendezvous. Dat means a B744 Mixed Config is able to transport the heavy yet huge Trent engine as MAS did on theirs to carry the replacement for a B777-2H6/ER at PER

To my recollection, China Southern has GE90-76B on their 772s, and -90B on their 772ERs.... Do correct if I`m wrong...
No, for the EK issue: Are their 777s ETOPS certified or not ? Singapore Air, 777s can fly even if they are not ETOPS certified!
