In their last year or so, they were used for flights between hubs and to Hawaii. Although I'm not sure on all these routes, I'd be willing to guess these are the ones they were used on at some time or another recently before their retirement.

SFO-DEN
SFO-ORD
SFO-IAD
SFO-HNL
LAX-DEN
LAX-ORD
LAX-IAD
LAX-HNL
DEN-IAD
DEN-ORD

Those routes seem to be correct. They also used the -200 interchangeably with the -400 from ORD-PHX and ORD-LAS (late 1999 when Pacific economies were in bad shape). Up until maybe 3 years ago, they flew the -200 from SFO_NRT and HNL-NRT. I remember about 6 years ago they used to fly a -200 on the Newark (EWR)-Tokyo(NRT) route nonstop- must have had a lot of load seats or extra fuel tanks. That route was interchangeable with the SP (God Bless it!) and later the -400. When I was young, early 1980s, they flew them from EWR-SFO and EWR-ORD as well as to Hawaii. Check on this website for photos of the -100 and -200 and maybe you will pick up some other airports they flew them to (maybe ORD-MIA in the winters, for example). Hope this helps!

I flew Business Class on a UAL 742 (hence my screen name!) from DEN-ORD then a 772 to CDG. The 742 is my favorite version of the 747. In the upper deck, where we sat, it was very neat. It was only our family and we had our own flight attendant for that area! Excellent flight  Smile. No more  Sad.

Two Classes Of 742s

You recall that United had a batch of early 742s bought from Qantas, and also two JT9D-7R4G2-powered 742s that they bought new after getting Pan Am's transpacific routes. It was these last two that they used on NY-Tokyo.

I know they did LAX-NRT as well.

The two 747-222s used on JFK-NRT were distinguishable by their lack of long antennae at the wingtips. They were integrated into the wingtips in a more modern fashion, much like the 757/767 wings.

I flew on one SFO-IAD (continuing on to ZRH, flight 965) way back when... Good planes. Too bad they're with Northwest Cargo now. =(
