PIA pilot allows lady friend to land plane

LAHORE: A PIA pilot Friday allegedly allowed his lady friend to land PK-584, a Fokker flight from Karachi to Lahore via Rahim Yar Khan, at Lahore Airport.

The sources in PIA told The News that two passengers Makhdoom Ishfaq Ahmed and Dr Amjad on board PK-584 complained to the Civil Aviation Authority and PIA high-ups at Lahore Airport that the pilot of the PK-584 allegedly invited a lady passenger to the cockpit and asked her to sit in his right side seat. They further alleged that the pilot allowed the lady to land the plane at Lahore Airport and helped her do so.

Makhdoom Ishfaq, a resident of Faisal Town Lahore, who also submitted a written complaint to the CAA and PIA authorities, protested against the pilot's irresponsible act and called it the highest violation of air safety rules as he had jeopardise scores of lives by allowing the lady to land the plane.

The sources in CAA said that as soon as the flight landed, Makhdoom Ishfaq came to the Airport Manager's Office and lodged a written complaint against the pilot. When contacted the flight operations officials at Lahore Airport confirmed the receipt of the complaint and said that the Director Operations (PIA), who was also in Lahore on Friday, was told about the incident and a detailed report was sent to the PIA Head Office in Karachi.

The officials added that PIA administration had already initiated official investigations into the incident and an inquiry would also be held in this regard. However, the PIA flight operations officials said that the incident was not possible because in the first place the jump seat beside the pilot in the cockpit could not be seen from outside, therefore, the complainant Makhdoom Ishfaq could not be sure whether the lady or the pilot landed the plane.

Secondly, the officials said, no pilot could be so irresponsible that he should jeopardise so many lives. They said that the plane landed at 12:55pm and they received the complaint as soon as Makhdoom Ishfaq came to the terminal.

When contacted the Lahore Airport Manager, Sohail Chuhan confirmed that Makhdoom Ishfaq had made a written complaint about an unknown lady's landing the plane and added that the report of the alleged incident had been sent to the C.A.A.high-ups for action.

However, some passengers confirmed the incident and said that they heard the lady passenger saying "I have landed the plane today." However, the pilot of the plane Asim denied any such incident saying "I deny the fact of the thing."
