Spotting Report:

Tue Jul 10, 2001 9:55 am

I've got to make my initial report quickly because I am on a public terminal at a library that's about to close.

I was at YYZ on Sunday, July 1, 2001, from 10:30 AM until 4:30 PM. Aside from a rather nasty sunburn, everything went smoothly for my approach and departure. I spotted at the Boeing lot with a 45 minute side trip down the road to some girly-bar's parking lot (which had prominent no-parking signs, but I just ignored them like the other people there.)

Seen:
lots of A320s and A319s, Dash-8s, CRJs, 767s
at least 10 757s, mostly AirTransat, also American, also Air Canada
several B737s; -200 Air Canada, -500 United Airlines, -300 Continental, USAirways
at least 1 of each: Fokker 100 (American) MD-80 (American, Delta), ERJ-145 (USAirways Express)

A340 (Air Canada, Air France)
747-300 (KLM)
767 (Alitalia, several Air Canada)
A330 (Air Canada)

Thanks for all the help, y'all (you know who you are), sorry I missed you!

CleCo, yes, YYZ is Toronto. I was up in Canada for a week and decided to see some real heavies!
More to my report:

747-400, Air Canada.
Fokker F-28 Friendship, Canadian Regional
DC-9s, Air Canada (someone told me there's not many left, so I must have seen all of them!)

Most of the people at the Boeing lot were very friendly. There must have been at least twenty cars there with a wide variety of ages. I was looking for Polaris all afternoon and because of that I met someone with the same first name who was very friendly.

Aircraft were landing on 23 and 24R. Most of the heavies were landing on 24R even though by the base map I had, that was the shorter of the two runways. Strangely enough, the Dash-8's were mostly taking off on 23, the long runway. Someone told me that it was due to the runway being closer to the commuter terminal.

The Air Canada A340 took off from Rwy 15R.

I was one of a very few who had scanners. Many of the people who I spot with at KCLE have scanners. Out of probably 100 people I saw at the Boeing lot, I think I saw five scanners, tops. In fact, at least ten people asked me what I had and what I used it for. Is scanning that much of a novelty in Canada?

The most interesting a/c that I saw was either a 737-300/400 or an A320 (couldn't tell, someone else probably knows) in a special BWIA scheme. It was a blue and white linear pattern... Almost like paisley, but angular... The general consensus among the people I was talking with at the time was that it was U-G-L-Y.

I ate brunch at the Golden Griddle restaurant, about 1 km southeast of the Boeing lot on Airport Road. That's where I programmed my scanner (using headphones, of course.) Do you YYZ spotters go there, ever? The owners quizzed me about my scanner and said "you must be a very important person." Uh, huh. Yeah. Sure.

Well, I'd love to hear from Gmonney, Polaris, and YOW, and any other Canadians who have spotted at YYZ -- did I get a good feel for the place? Did I miss anything?

Hey, Canadians! Where are you? I'm waiting for some sort of feedback!
