Air Force One

Sun Jun 13, 1999 6:31 am

American president is coming to Slovenia later next week and I would like to know if there are going to be any extreme security precautions around the airport?

I will be behind the fence about 1000 meters south of runway threshold, do you think that I will be allowed to be there (there is a huge fence around the airport area)? There are absolutely no problems if you are there in the 'normal' time, even for hours (my record is 7 hours).

Cannot wait to see the AF1 in live!

I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

The US is VERY careful around their equipment. For example a new Airbase is being built on my island of Curacao. This will be the replacement for Howard Air Force base. Right now they already have 5 F-16 parked alongside the general Aviation ramp. Almost everyday you can see the cavorting around in the air, but don't dare get to close. They have the parking area roped off and on a small sign hanging on the rope it says, No trespassing, use of deadly force is authorised. This for 5 cheesy F-16C's. Now imagine what precausion the will take when the president is on board an airplane.

You can be sure your airport will be very different when the US president arrives there.
Last year a NATO meeting took place here close to my city and the US defence secretary, William Cohen (Sorry but I don't know the exact name) was here. I saw maybe the Airforce 3 or 4 (one 757 and one 707).
While I was at my spoting place as usual, all the time about 50 meters away, there was a police car whatching us. In 6 years of plane spoting in that place it was the first time to see a police car (outside the fence).
Imagine with the president...

BTW. 2 weeks ago, I passed in your country, lovely.

Yes, you can be sure that your presence will be noted by securtiy and you may even be approached to see what kind of equipment you are carrying. In my experience, if you are pleasant and cooperative, they will let you stay.

We had this Helsinki summit here a couple of years back and I have to say I have never seen anything like that! Policemen and soldiers were everywhere! Helicopters were flying around and it was very difficult to find a position for photographing. Well, we checked out which runway was in use and went to a car store nearby. We asked the owner and got the permission to go up to the roof! There we were hiding from helicopters for some time and eventually got excellent photos of AF1 flying directly above us at very low altitude! The 707 came just after it also. A road near the threshold was closed here, so it might be same there. Good luck!
