Int'l Route Serviced By Largest # Of Carriers?

Thu Jul 12, 2001 5:35 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows which single international route (NON-STOP) is serviced by the largest number of carriers. In other words, which route can you fly non-stop where you have the greatest number of airlines to choose from? I think that LAX-NRT has to be one of such routes as it is serviced non-stop by 10 different carriers:

1. DL Delta (daily)
2. JL JAL (12 flights/week)
3. KE Korean Air (daily)
4. MH Malaysia Air (3 flights/week)
5. NH ANA (daily)
6. NW Northwest (daily)
7. RG Varig (4 flights/week)
8. SQ Singapore (daily)
9. TG Thai Airways International (4 flights/week)
10. UA United (Daily)

Can anyone think of another route where there is such a large number of carriers to choose from? I think that BKK-HKG is up there (I counted about 9 carriers: Thai, Cathay, Sri Lankan, Egypt Air, Japan Asia, China Air, PIA, Emirates, and Gulf Air). Are there any other such markets that are not dominated by any one or two carriers?

Frankfurt - New York
you have AA, CO, DL, KU, LH, SQ and as much as I know LTU and Condor also fly there but as charters.
Well but that still doesn't beat your 10 airlines...

Godbless, AA doesn't serve FRA-JFK anymore. They suspended the route about a year ago.
I'm also not 100% sure if KU still flies there.
Air India used to fly there but also already pulled out a while back.

Best regards,

Ok I checked on the FRA-NEW YORK.
Kuwait is still flying to JFK from FRA. CO goes into EWR of course.

So there's only 4 airlines doing FRA-JFK + LH / CO doing FRA-EWR.
Not too much.
I can't remember DE flying to New York at all.
If LTU does or probably rather did so they probably went DUS-JFK.

Miami-Carcas is done by American, United, Servivensa, Avensa, and Aeropostal for a total of I think 10 dailies. Miami-Sao Paulo is handled by American, Varig, TAM, TransBrasil, and United for what I think is seven (soon eight when TAM goes double daily in August) dailies. Miami-San Jose (CR) is also done by five airlines - American, Iberia, LACSA, LTU, and Martinair. LTU, Iberia, and Martinair all have fifth-freedom rights on the routes.
