NEW YORK, July 12 (Reuters) - Federal regulators, concerned that widely used jet engines may lose power during takeoffs, are expected to order the removal and refurbishment of certain older engines made by the Pratt & Whitney unit of United Technologies Corp , the Wall Street Journal said.

The move will affect at least hundreds of the roughly 2,000 longer-range Pratt engines in service on Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and dozens of other carriers world-wide, the newspaper said.

The Federal Aviation Administration's action, expected to be announced in the next few days, is expected to disrupt maintenance schedules. According to these officials, this could result in the temporary grounding of a limited number of jetliners waiting for replacement parts or engines, the newspaper said.

An FAA spokesman told the newspaper the agency is ``reviewing data received from Pratt & Whitney and is considering appropriate airworthiness action.''

Why has this problem not occured on aircraft owned by US airlines. This looks like an isolated incident, could have been caused by poor maintenance.
