Wonder How UA Feels About SQ Flying Into ORD

Fri Jul 13, 2001 1:17 am

Although SQ and UA are supposed to be 'partners' in Star Alliance, they're not codesharing on the new SQ flight to ORD. In fact, they still heavily compete on the SIN-USA routes. I know alliances don't mean that competition necessarily has to end, but in the case of SIN-Germany for example, SQ and LH have a virtual monopoly over those routes. Wonder how UA feels about SQ flying right into their homebase. Though I doubt they could be much of a threat to UA with only 3 flights a week, but still....... When SQ first flew to NYC via AMS and FRA, did many flock to SQ on the trans-atlantic sector?

I think today many people choose SQ over LH on the FRA-JFK secto. I would for instance do so, too.

I wonder why SQ flies to ORD via AMS. WOuldn't it be a shorter travel time if they flew something like SIN-NRT-ORD ? I guess it's shorter.

It all depends on what the US DOT will allow a foreign carrier to fly. You just can't say "I'm going to fly from St. Louis to Tokyo"... it takes years of filing and requests with the US Government.

In regards to a codeshare, United and Singapore have to file with the US Gvt for permission in order to allow a codeshare... not sure if they have or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't.

Singapore and the USA have an open-skies agreement, which I think, means that SQ can fly 25 times a day from Singapore to St Louis if it so wishes. However, it is impossible to get to the continental USA from Singapore without a stopover. I guess the Jap govt won't let SQ get more slots at NRT to get to ORD. I suppose LH would never allow a FRA-ORD route for SQ and neither would the UK govt allow a LHR-ORD route for them. I suppose AMS is the only other commercially viable route. I suppose I suppose...... We never know how the people up there negotiate.....

777D- He did not mean it that way. He was just shortening "Japanese Government". Give Docpepz a break.

what's wrong with being a racist? so many liberals here, ya'd think they would allow room for total equality, even those that don't believe in equality.

It may not be an official code share where United sells tickets on Singapore's planes under its own name, but as a Star Alliance member, I don't care. I get credit on either flight. Although at my level in Mileage Plus, I wouldn't get double miles on Singapore, only United. Star Alliance partners make efforts to fly to each other's hubs for the convenience of passengers needing to transfer to other flights. SAS now flies to Dulles, for example as does Austrian. Lufthansa flies into Denver, etc. I love the seamless travel of Star Alliance and appreciate the efforts of its members to coordinate with each other's flights and hubs.

SQ and UA do have permission to code-share on routes from SIN to USA. Read it in the dockets on the DoT web-site. They're not currently using the permission.

777D,

I was honestly using "Jap govt" as a short form for Japanese government. If the term "Jap govt" is somewhat derogotary to some, I'm sorry then........Never thought this topic would blow into something racial. And FYI, I'm part Indian part Chinese residing in Singapore, and there's no reason for me to be racist against Asians! Or anyone, for that matter.

Anyway to the rest of you, thanks for your comments.

Wonder How UA Feels About SQ Flying Into ORD

Docpepz,

Well, I bet that UA is worried somewhat because of the reputation that Singapore has with the flying public. The person who has the choice to fly Singapore or United, I assume that Singapore would be the choice. But the issue of price would play a role I assume. Would UA lower there fares to counter Singapore?

I am half Japanese and living in the USA I have heard that word you used so many times that it still carries a deep sting when I hear or read that word. It is so blatantly racist that I am surprised that someone of Asian decent would use that particular word. There are Asian cultures, Chinese and Koreans to name a few who still dislike the Japanese tremendously. Those wounds from the 50 years or so ago still there.

The issue of racism is done....

Your apology is sincere.

Regards.....

Apparently UA sold SIN-USA fares for SGD400 from Singapore last month, for one day, in response to SIA undercutting them from Chicago. I don't know how true it is. but S$400+ is like just over US$200. THat is dirt cheap! Apparently the plan backfired on them though. Many UA passengers who originally paid SGD1800 cancelled their tickets and booked the $400 one instead. Does anyone living in the midwest have any idea what SQ is charging for ORD-AMS and ORD-SIN respectively? I guess their ORD-AMS would have to be priced pretty low since it's only thrice a week.

I'm only 19, I have absolutely no hatred for the Japanese at all. I love everybody for what they are.....yeah......
