Biman Bangladesh Airlines To Melbourne?

Mon Jul 16, 2001 6:54 pm

In what i have to say is strange news to me, today i heard that Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be flying to Melbourne. This information was passed onto me through a travel agency, but even I question why they would fly here.

There is not a big Bangladeshi population at all, and it is a strange move. If I can get any evidence of this, I hope I can pass it on......Anyone else haerd this rumor/story?

That's nearly as strange as my employer's rumoured interest in buying all or part of Biman last year!

this sounds very bizarre...
could be a series of charters perhaps. Was it an "ethnic" travel agent, the ones that specialise in charters for immigrants going home for holidays?

Could it have been a misinformation from the travel agency? Perhaps only the first leg of that flight was discussed. BG to Singapore and then change of planes to Qantas or SIA, perhaps?

Yes, i would have thought the same thing, like a charter series or some sort of additional connection sector with another carrier, but no he explained to me starting later on in the year it will start DC-10 services to MEL via SIN.

Ethnic travel agents are specialists in VFR travel ( visiting friends and relatives ). This one also caters for other tourist travel services too.

All I can say is it is hard for me to see a market for such a service at all.... Any other weird routes that many dont see a market for but still exist for weird reasons?

I lived in Bangladesh for the past three years. There are actually quite a few (a lot) of Bangladeshi's who live in Australia, mostly in Melbourne. That is probably the reason. I did a huge research project on Biman and learned that their mission statement is to be an airline to cater to the people of Bangladesh.

Perhaps Biman is joining her Asian (or Southeast Asian) counterparts and competitors in wanting to grab a share of the Australia - Europe pie.

Can't blame them for it . . . it has been too good for too long for the many airlines that have done that.

Well I live in Melbourne and dont know many if any bangladeshi people, and they arent a huge ethnic group here. Greek, Italian and other European countries, plus China, Vietnam yes are large markets here, but in the last census it was a small number.

If they are heading to Mel for a slice of the Europe-Oz pie, they could be heading for a big loss in this competitive market. BA has just rejoined Melbournes carrier list, and other airlines are upgrading services ( Malaysian goes 2wice daily here now too, joining Singapore at 2wice daily service.)

It is rurored by some that Olympic will totally change track and fly only to Mel in the future, changing to a Mel hub over Syd as Syd is now too ineffiecent on its bottom line.

If this is the case I really do see other carriers moving south to Mel or north to join Virgin Blue in Brisbane. Virgin Atlantic is looking at a London-Shanghai-Brisbane-Melbourne route soon I am told, so Sydney may be missing out on some traffic. The Syd-Lon route is already saturated by capacity and I see many other markets getting new services.

Melbourne Airports Services?

Tue Jul 17, 2001 7:08 pm

Well I heard that one ages ago, and well I dont think that will eventuate either.

This is the list of airlines that have at one stage or another ( in the last 5 years) said they would fly to Mel:

* El Al
* PIA
* Biman Bangladesh
* EgyptAir ( Opted only for Sydney )
* Sri Lankan ( Stopped flying here, but is rumoured to be returning soon, would love to see them here.)
* Air India
* JAL ( before the '97 problems )
* South African Airways ( Wont happen now due to the QF codeshare )
* Aerolines Argentina ( Certainly wont be happening.....)

That is a fair list, now add the airlines that have left in the last 15 years:

* UTA ( Merged into AF )
* Lufthansa
* Continental
* KLM
* Alitalia
* BA ( Since returned )
* Olympic Airways ( Was planned )
* Merpati Indonesia
* Kiwi Airlines ( since defunct )
* Air Lanka ( now Sri Lankan )
* PanAm ( services taken over by United )

Any Others that Ive missed?

As you can see its a fair list, and new additions in the last 10 years have been:

* Air Mauritius
* Vietnam Airlines
* Emirates ( made it its Australian hub )
* China Southern

The joys of running an airport...lol...

Indianicworld, I am curious about your definition of "hub" to me a flight that lands at midnight or there abouts and then does not connect to any other destination cannot be described as a hub operation.
I gather that you live in Melbourne ? I hope you do get some extra flights but let us live in reality, as my man in Melbourne says the most frequent visitor to Melbourne airport is AIR JACK, as in jack all, sad but but true.

look the whole thing is that Melbourne is actually better suited than sydney for this traffic, has 24 hour operation and if given a chance will rival Sydney...

I guess your from Sydney too? All Sydney people complain about the airport and where it is, but they never seem to stop bagging Melbourne for many reasons.

If Sydney didnt have Qantas it would have nothing, so if you look at it that way all Sydney really is a mess, until they build another airport...Might as well place it in Melbourne, its just as close as more of the other alternatives offered...lol

I think Biman hopes for european passengers to Melburne, they have well booked flights to london and Frankfurt. They have low fares there is no bigger accident in their hystorie. For people with small money this is a good alternative. Why not?

Hmm, after examining the issue, there are quite a lot of Bangladeshis living in New Zealand. Perhaps Air New Zealand or Qantas have a flight from Christchurch to Melbourne. Biman maybe trying to capture these passengers. Or on other hand, I agree with SQ325.

Indie, your a touchy little soul aren't you !!, All I did was ask for your defintion of a hub, and then hoped you would get more services. However if you want to go into facts and airline preferences lets look at a couple of things. Melbourne is almost the same size as Sydney in population but does it have a similar amount of flights ? the answer is no. The airline that is based in Melbourne, where do they fly their 744's from and how many more frequencies do they have from SYD ?
I personally have nothing against Melbourne, I feel for your plight, what good stuff you get shows up at midnight and leaves shortly there after, but there must be a reason why so many carriers who are still flying to Australia, I stress still flying to Australia, fly to Sydney either as there only destination or more frequently, lets face it Brisbane has as many flights as Melbourne.
Anyway I don't want to get into a SYD/MEL thing, I hope you do get Biman and if they do show up and thats a big if, I hope they arrive and depart at great times and whats more let them rotate the entire DC10 fleet through !

sorry about that misunderstanding jupiter2. Do u think the flight will go via Syd too though...Is there a big population in Syd anyway of bangladeshi people?

btw.....Mel has just passed 3 mil international passengers.....Bris has 2.4 mil...it seems like the Asian economic problems really have affected Bris and Cairns. Bris is too much of a leisure destination i guess, thats why it is suffering...

I agree that Syd is a bigger hub, but airline policy and the subsequent routing of alot of flights throiugh their Syd hubs, has helped drive deamnd in Syd, plus all that ATC ( australian Tourist Commission ) syd advertising too. It all has to hep drve its demand too.

Indie, to be honest I have no idea if there is a large Bangladeshi community here, but I would expect if they do fly to Oz they would fly to both cities, do a similar routing to the night MAS/ THAI/ GULF flights, ie: in through one city then to the other and straight out.
In regards to MEL/BNE pax figures it is good to see MEL has picked up, but a lot of that is on the standard carriers like SQ/MH/TG who have more than one flight through MEL, where as BNE only gets basically a daily service from the above carriers but also gets JL/KE/BR/PX, not the capacity of MEL but a bit more variety.
As far as SYD goes, well its probably more historical as much as anything, once QF was based here especially, SYD was going to be the primary destination, even when QF was purely an international operator, the 2 domestic carriers sat there and fed off what they brought in. Also as much as Melbourne has to offer, I truly believe Sydney is one of most beautiful cities in the world and has a stack of things for the tourist, both international and domestic to do.
One last thing, when Tulla was built it was out in the sticks so to speak, now the residential areas are creeping up on it. If it continues the loud voice of the vocal, idiotic minority who move into the area and build their houses will demand a curfew and if they make another noise, pardon the pun, will get their way
All the best.

Great points raised there....thanx for your ideas on the subject, only hope that the European carriers come to Oz again, like lufthansa.

Its a pity that Mel didnt get a new airport before 1971, which saw Melb miss out for so many years, but it has meant we do have a good airport to utilise now.

Thanx
