AA To Increase Hawaii Service

Wed Jul 18, 2001 7:55 am

Beginning Sept 5 American Airlines will begin daily service between LAX and KOA, the service is being dropped by TWA LLC on Sept 4.
On October 3 American Airlines will add a 3rd daily flight between LAX and HNL and in November AA will add a second LAXOGG flight. All of the new service will be with B757 aircraft. The HNL and OGG markets will also see additional Saturday only service.

757s across the Pacific for 5 hrs?!?!
No way!
I'd much rather fly Hawaiian Airlines DC-10s on this route.

I would also rather fly on a DC-10 instead of a 757 because the DC-10 is going to be gone soon, but an overwater operation is not a problem for the 757. The 757 at American is ETOPS certified. I can understand that a lot of passengers would be concerned about travelling on a 757 across an ocean because they don't like the idea of flying on a narrowbody on a long haul flight, but a five-hour leg across the ocean is absolutely no problem for the 757 as long as it gets ETOPS certification. Continental has been operating the 757 on transatlantic flights.
I beleive that United also operates the 757 on flights from the West Coast to Hawaii.

American 767:
I agree, and I know it is safe. I just don't want a narrow body 'twin' over the ocean.
I've flown 707, DC-8 and IL-62 over water before and that was OK because they were 'quads'.  Big thumbs up

TWA could and did fly a 757 non-stop HNL-STL (though not the other way around)...try a 757 for NINE HOURS.

acutally it was really really really good (thank you TWA!) It's kinda like those people who bash 737s flying across the pacific (gotta try it before you bash it.

Flying an AA 757-200 between the US West Coast and Hawaii shouldn't be a bad experience. After all, the AA planes have their roomier coach seating arrangements.  Smile

Great news!!! KOA could use just a tad more AA service.

However I am rather torn on this. I am a very huge fan of Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines, this means more competiton. Also, I love the DC-10, sad to see that go.

But I am also a huge lover of the 757, especially in AA's livery, so it'll be nice to see that on the ramp when I get there!!!

Aloha Ahiahi,

Aloha 737-200!!  Wink/being sarcastic

Although a little off the topic...I find the service better on narrowbody planes than on widebodies. I don't actively seek them for transcons..but I'm not the least dissapointed when I arrive at the gate and its a 737/757 or 320

United uses a mix of 757/767/777 on the Hawaii flights.

By the way, any rumors as to when they are to restart ORD-HNL (or possible DEN-HNL, much like DL's SLC-HNL)? My mom said there is a rumor that they are.

I wouldnt mind the 757 to HNL. I fly 5 hrs on transcon 757 flights. Also it looks like HA isnt going to have the dc-10's long as they have made arraingements to aquire 16 767-300 er's

Why was TWA flying the 757 on that route?

I agree, I would MUCH rather be on a DC-10. The 10 was always one of my favorite airplanes. I am very sad to see them disappearing from the skys. I may but a ticket on HA just so I can fly on this great airplane one more time!
