DL Livery Update

Fri Jul 20, 2001 2:54 pm

There are currently 130 a/c painted in the newest livery. 246 are in the 1997 livery and the remaining 222 are in the old livery or "flying widget" variety. According to the company news magazine "Delta Digest" dated July 17, 2001 "The tentative plan is to accelerate the paint line to get the oldest logo out by mid 2002." I hope this can be done but the plan seems a bit ambitious and overly optimistic considering that mid 2002 is less than a year away. However, I seem to recall that CO did their whole fleet within a year at the behest of Bethune so who knows, maybe DL can pull it off.

I honestly don't understand how they can take so long to paint all their planes. It has been over a year now since the livery change, and they have only painted 130 planes?!? I travelled through Atlanta on Delta yesterday and saw a whole terminal full of Delta planes in the whole livery! We had a new livery plane (brand new 737-800) and a 767-300 in old-new colors (paint looked great). I saw one of the remaining L1011s...it looked horrible. Delta had allowed the white part of the plane to turn almost black...with paint chipping off and everything. I would never want to fly on the plane for a million years. The new livery and look is great, I wish they would speed it up, come on Mullin!

A few weeks ago I also saw the new/new livery on an Md-90 for the first time; looks like they are finally starting to paint these birds. I must say it is a big improvement over the old/old scheme which always looked rather "dirty" to me on the Md-90s.

Awesome.

As an ATL boy...I'm sick of seeing of the Brady scheme and the half-assed scheme. The wavy flag rocks.

Speaking of the old/old livery, even it had more than one version. Most of the widgets were right side up, but some were sideways, ("Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!  Smile) as shown in this photo.

Delta is moving as rapidly as it can on repainting its fleet. But remember, if a plane is being painted then it isn't flying and making revenue for the airline. The company needs all the revenue it can get.

However, remember that Delta is going to be taking 3 planes out of service for maintenance for a while. I'm sure that this will help accelerate the painting.

Why don't people complain about Finnair and its three liveries? Stop picking on Delta!

What's the status at Delta Express? Is it included in that count?
I think this is the first one in new colors:

I think the new livery is great. One of the better ones for a US airline. The only problem I have with the new scheme is the unfinished look that the silver bottom creates. They should have used all white.

If you think that is slow, Cathay Pacific took forever to paint their whole fleet!
I really wish they kept the old-new scheme, that one rocked. However,I like the wavy flag because they re-introduced the widget.

At BOS it seems like we only get the old and the new, not many "interim". Then again, it must be one of those things where when I go DL only sends in those planes.

The sideways widget in the mid to late 60s was ...well, maybe more than a "test scheme" ...but only got sprayed on the DC-9s because company execs felt the regular "vertical" widget couldn't be displayed prominently enough on the smaller fuselage.

Obviously someone at some point went "Uhhhh....No."

While were discussing DL's paint schemes...

Has the 'Spirit of Delta' been repainted? Haven't seen for awhile and it looked pretty bad the last time it was in LAS.

As for taking forever to repaint a fleet, you folks should look to the railroads. Union Pacific's the worst - three years now and they can even decide on a numbering sequence for their locomotives! Let alone get them painted...

Last time I saw the Spirit of Delta was at the end of May. It was at the TOC... in the old livery.

As far as Delta taking so long to paint their aircraft in the new livery, when Southwest announced that they were changing their livery, this was part of the press release:

Our existing fleet will be retrofitted over time into the new livery." Southwest expects to receive 25 Boeing 737-700s in 2001; 27 in 2002; and up to 26 in 2003. Southwest currently has orders with the Boeing Co. up to 2012. As for its existing planes, retrofits will be done over the course of the next ten years as part of Southwest's normal maintenance program.

I'm assuming that means the new interior AND the exterior paint but I could be wrong.

As of lately only one paint line has been in use in ATL. The other two "paint bays" have been used for letter check and mod work. Some of the 767 were done at PAE by Boeing. As of Sept the PAE line expands to two aircraft and somebody in PHX will be doing two at a time also. So every day up to five aircraft will be in paint process. The first MD11 is to be done in ATL in Nov.

With the USAir/UAL merger falling apart, I find it unlikely that a CO/DL merger would be happening now.

The AA/TWA merger was more like a good buy for some more planes and routes, than a real merger.

I also found it sad that the rumor about one of the last L-1011s, 740DL not being painted in the "Wavey Gravey" Livery.
The rumor was that at the end of it's "C" check " back in April it was going to be painted in the "New-New" aka Wavey Gravey. But it was stoped because the it was needed back on the line.
The reason I heard was that Delta really want's to get the cabin changes to 767-400s done with.

I am interested in the DL livery changeover and recently spent some vacation time visiting DFW, CVG and ATL to view the Delta operation.

Thanks to a response on airliners.net, I met a DL Engineer/Mechanic who treated me to a tour of the ATL base.

I have an almost up-to-date list of liveries (new, mid & old) and am updating it regularly, along with fleet additions and deletions.

This topic has created some interest - I am not highly skilled in computer knowledge. Would anyone care to create a "Delta Fleet Fan" web site, which would continue to update the fleet - additions, deletions and livery changes. I would provide the full fleet list and status of each aircraft to the web-site creator.

Enthusiasts could track the changes and advise the creator of changes, as well as adding some photographs. I would provide updates as provided to me by my contact.
