Remote Airfield At LAX

Fri Jul 20, 2001 3:01 pm

My parents went to LAX on Sun Country Airlines last May. I had known that they left from the international terminal at LAX. They said they landed at some remote area of the airfield and were bussed in to the intl. term. My mom couldn't explain where it was however.

Has anyone gone through this experience? Does anyone know where they park or what airlines do this?

They do it whenever Tom Bradley Intl Terminal is full, which is pretty often during the day. No airlines use it regularly, but you will see planes of almost any airline there from time to time. The remote terminal is at the westmost end of the field.

Located at the west end of LAX off the 06/24 runway complex is a remote parking area containing both jetway and hardstand parking spots.
Aircraft parking out at these gates usually is a result of overflow activity from the International Terminal which only contains 10 wide body and 2 narrow body gates. You can often find 10 plus aircraft using these remote gates at peak periods.
As a piece of trivia these remote parking spots are also used for VIP acitivity like Air Force One.

The last couple times I've flown through LAX my plane has steered a course for this part of the airport...but fortunately we just idled there waiting for a gate to clear - at SW no less.

I thought they also used this part of the airport for filming movies...

When I came back from the Philippines The gates were all full so the Philippine Airlines 747 had to go to the remote parking spaces. It was cool but the workers at the airport packed the buses so tight You couldn't even move and you had your carry-ons with you. You can pass by them and have a good look at the aircrafts when you take the road that runs about parallel with the north runways I think Pioneer Blvd. and then there's a road that runs north south at the west end of the airport. Nice spotting there, but I think that whole area is a no parking or stopping area.

During the most recent construction project at American's terminal #4, our flight from D/FW (MD-80) used the remote area. Also on the ramp was a 737-800 of North American and an untitled DC-8-72. They couldn't, for whatever reason, get the jetway to lower down enough for an MD-80 so we got to exit thru the rear stairs and onto a bus over to the terminal. Overall, I think it's just extra gate space for the "it's" of the airport, meaning, the one's who can't or don't utilize the standard gate areas.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
