Spirit Jet Loses Engine Pieces Over Detroit- 7-20

Sat Jul 21, 2001 12:30 pm

I just saw this on my 11:00 news- A Spirit Airlines jet Flight 1572 (I think that's what it said) made an emergency landing at DTW after it lost an engine in-flight. Also, the jet lost pieces of the engines over a neighborhood near DTW. No one hurt, although there was some minor damage to cars and a roof in the area.

Anyone know the jet type (I think MD-80), origin or any info?

Enginge failures happen with no predictability. Just because this happened on this flight does not indicate that Spirit has bad maintenance.

I am not saying you are wrong to be freaked out. Nor am I saying "don't worry be happy". I am just saying that engine failures happen. Look at United 282. Had nothing to do with United's maintenance, or even GE's assembly. Having said that, the finger has been pointed at both of those companies...

Anyhow, I hope your friend has a safe two engined flight!!!

Thanks AA737-823, that helped.  Smile

I will be the first to say (in this thread at least) that Spirit is an excellent airline, as they offer low fares, direct flights and wonderful service on their flights. If I needed to fly somewhere and it was at the last minute (TPA being the probable location) it would be Spirit.

I saw some video of it and the falling engine piece fell on & smashed the back window of someone's car!!!

Some kids were gathering up little pieces - lookin for nuts and bolts - ...almost like an easter egg hunt!

Kinda Scary!

"Uh, honey, better come take a look at the car...remember that jet that passed over the house earlier? Um..well.....you better come see this!!"

How Did It Fall Off?

Sun Jul 22, 2001 3:41 pm

How do pieces or an actual turbofan detatch from the wings? There was a KLM flight maybe a year ago on a 747 that had its engine actually fall off in flight. Makes you wonder... winshield companies will make lots of $$$ if this keeps up!  Wink/being sarcastic

Anybody know which aircraft this was? Spirit has 10 MD-82 one that was built in china. I believe that plane is the only Eastern built airliner in service in the United States.

I work in detroit and and got to take a look at the engine in question. Although I am not a mechanic, it was evident the failure occurred prior to the last set of fan blades. I could see where the debris passed through them and caused damage.

What is going on with the P&W JT8D series engines on the MD-80 lately? Last week a few TWA MD-80s had some engine problems in flight and had to make emergency landings.

TWA has had 4 incidents involving uncontrolled engine failures... 2 on flights from San Jose, Cali, one from Miami (showered a parking lot with pieces from the engine) and the other was a flight from Phoenix I think. Unusual thing is most of these happened in a few week's time.

Does anyone know which community near DTW where the engine fell? I didn't hear it on the news for some reason and I live near Detroit

I think the debris landed in Dearborn Heights, from what this article from The Detroit News says.

Cool link, Hyper. Looks like it was fairly well contained, though.
