Flight Numbers

why do so many european airlines put a letter after
the flight number ie baw35m,baw77g,aza64h,amm45c.
are tickets sold with these flight numbers or is it just
for atc purposes.........just curious

Believe it's do with ATC. as it could be very confusing if 2 or more flights have very similar numbers with an aircraft responding to a message that was meant for another flight.

Britannia use "A" for outbound flights from the UK and "B" for inbound
Air 2000 use "C" for outbound and "D" for inbound
JMC use "K" for outbound and "L" for inbound
