well, actually the departure TAX of HKG is now HK$50 ( around US$6.45)
and now it is just raise to HK$80.
the exchange rate is US$1 = HK$7.8

it is relative cheap now. Long time ago ( when we were still using the Kai Tak Airport) the tax was once over $150.. or even $200, not quite sure.

HK$1=US$7.78 (government fixed rating)
HK$1=EU$6.6775 (floating rate, date due:20 July 2001)

so HK$80=US$10.28
or HK$80=EU$11.81

$6.45 HK=$0.83
$80 HK=$10.26
Not bad, really. When I was flying thru Osaka/Kansai, they charge adults 2,650 yen or about $25.

It's being raised to meet with the growing structural deficit that the HK government is facing with regards to its entire financial structure.

It's not that high (compared with pre-1997), but it's not really going to help the govt very much, as most of the passengers that go through CLK are transit passengers and aren't taxed anyway............

Passengers transiting HKG for less than 24 hrs are NOT required to pay the tax.

Also, this is a drop in the ocean compared to LHR's exorbidant taxes. I believe they are upto around US$70 now.
