Tue Jul 24, 2001 6:06 am

Hi everybody,

inspired by "Lindy Field" ´s threads "strange aircraft/airline combinations", I´ll start one of these as well:

Please have a look at this picture:

Any comments? Who can shed some light on this issue?

Thanks,

Hi there,
A LH 767 is not quite an oddity. as the DC- 8
was during the 60's.
I have read or heard about the Dc 8 some time
ago. What I remember is that Douglas gave
LH a Dc 8 for a while to let them see if they liked it.
I can't remember the exact number, but I guess
it was only one DC-8. What I remember is that
this type was exclusivly used between Frankfurt
Montreal and New York.
I would love to hear from someone who knows more
about this and how long did LH had the DC-8 for.
I will email my friend/s who work for LH for more info.
KIndest regards.

It was N8008D, this aircraft flew later on with Aeromexico and sits now in the desert, at Marana, I believe.

Hi There,
No, it shouldn't be as odd as saying for example, Boeing is offering Ariana airlines a brand new airplane
to try out, in case they are interested in buying
a batch from Airbus.

I meant an "oddity" in the sense of Lufthansa not using the 767 extensively in it's fleet. I understand the one pictured was leased temporarily to fill a certain route.. the DC-8 was probably the same thing.. Given the airline's traditionally known fleet these aircraft stand out as being a bit unusual only because they were not considered to be widely used standard Lufthansa aircraft types.. nothing more or less than that. Iberia has done the same with the 767.. some airlines like Delta inherited aircraft like the A310 from a merger (with Pan am in their case), Air India had TriStars for a short while and so did Aer Lingus..

i read in a dc 8 book that is was leases by lufthansa in 65 for charter operations, this plane was ship 1 which was converted to a DC8-53.
i guess lufthasa saw no advantage compared to their already existing 707 fleet.

The 767 is D-ABUC and was leased from Condor.

Lots of companies have operated aircraft not normally in their fleet - BA operated a 727 for a while - leased from American Trans Air (i think)
English First, British Second, european Never!

LH operated the DE 767 in 1994. That was their last try to keep up service to Australia which didn't last very long...

LH And DC8

LH leased ship 1 for a short period in 1966 ( i think).

It's ship one of DC-8 line. XA-DOE was scrapped in 1998??

This is Martinair's PH-MCG, on lease to Virgin Atlantic. Nice-looking plane!

Air France's livery appeared on some interesting aircraft, including a CV-990 and a DC-8-54, along with a Super DC-8:

I also remember seeing a picture an Il-62 in Air India markings; this aircraft operated a joint Aeroflot service between New Delhi and Moscow in the 1980s. Air India has operated several DC-8-63s on cargo flights as well.

MSN 45252/LN1 N8008D. Leased from Trans International May 11, 1965 to DEC 1965. Previously operated by National, later by SP Air, Delta and Agro Air Transport. Fine Air was going to buy the aircraft and convert it to a freighter, but these plans did not materialize. Sadly, although I'm always at MZJ, Iforget what is here. As far as I know N8008D still sits here, derelict. Needs a good museum. I'll have to look next week.
