NW World Biz Class - Choose Upper Or Lower Deck?

Tue Jul 24, 2001 7:29 am

My partner and I are flying in Northwest's World Business Class from JFK to AMS next month. According to nwa.com, we'll be on a 744. According to the seat map, the lower deck has more room between rows at the front of the cabin. However, I was talking to a couple of NW senior flight attendants who are friends of mine, and they said the upper deck is quieter and more exclusive, and they recommended we stay up there (our seats are currently assigned up there, row 74). I tend to agree - I mean, how often does one get to sit up there? Anyone flown them recently and can offer opinions?

Definitly go with the Upper Deck. No question. Much quieter than both the nose and the mid sections, best part is that staffing is generally three up there (two aisle, one galley), providing for excellent service.

Furthermore, if you or your partner happens to have a window seat (not good for viewing, mind you), they make the best "sleeper seats". Recline all the way, stuff a few pillows where the seatback and the cushion come together, and slouch as far as you can, placing your feet and legs on the side storage bins (works best when there's no one in the seat in front!).

If you can, I would try to switch to a -200, as the seat pitch has not been reconfigured on the Upper Deck from the old First Class pitch...70-some inches of pitch for the lucky 12 up there! (oh but wait...NW only puts "the junkers" on their Asian flights...).

Either way, hope you two have a great time!

Thanks for the info! Great suggestions.

I'm a little confused by your comment "not good for viewing, mind you" Were you joking, or did you really mean that? I've flown in the upper deck once, 14 years ago. As far as I can remember, the view was great. Can you elaborate?

I flew up there on my last flight to ICN (Seoul), via NRT. I think what 777UAL means is that due to the angle of the upper deck (it curves inward), it's very difficult to see anything on the ground or beneath the plane. As such, when you're landing, you won't see much until you're very, very close to the ground. This is even more pronounced if you're in the aisle seat. I didn't note a difference in the seat pitch from the main WBC cabin below and it was a 742 but I could be wrong. Have a great flight. It should be a lot of fun!

Definitely take the upper deck seating....one aisle and not as many people wandering around looking for a free lav or bumping your shoulders. I flew JFK-NRT-HKG and back last month and was pretty comfortable. The NRT-HKG segment was in a -200 and had the old first class seats and pitch which was quite nice.

Enjoy your trip!

Once again, have fun!
