Canadian Spotters, Brace Yourselves!

Tue Jul 24, 2001 11:36 am

To all the Canadian spotters.
The next G8 summit is to be held in Kanaskas (50 miles from Calgary). Can you imagine the variety of unusual visitors during that period?
Air Force One
Russian IL96
Two Japanese Air Force 747-400s
French and German Air Force A310s
Italian Air Force A319

Wow. This is definitly worth a trip to Calgary International next July!

Only thing is that Italian wont bring A319s cuz its too far off the range.. I was at YYC and it was at a normal busy rate..
Nothing new except I met a fellow photographer at a.net
To me this would be an awesome experience.. Air Force one!
Calgarys expanding right now so its all good as far as Im concerned..

Allee,

As far as I know Banff has no airport, but even if it has one I do not htink it will be able to accomodate such a large number of large aircraft.

Banff does have an airport but is not used for any commerical flights. I believe it is a dirt runway and has problems from the winds off the mountains. I can see the runway from the Trans-Canada Hwy.

Just one thing to add. A bad one:

I guess the spotters will be "deleted" by the hundreds of cops and other security guys from KGB, CIA, MI6...
They just won't understand what it means for us to see these aircraft. Well, let's hope not.

Based on the results in Italy spotters can expect to be shot, beaten, broken and abused for getting near the oligarpy's planes.

LOL!
You just reminded me of something that happened to my uncle a while ago. A few years ago they had a G8 summit (it might have been G7 then) in Halifax (not far from where he lives). He was in YHZ at the time and thought he would check out what was going on. I forget exactly where he was but it was near where all the stuff was going on and he could see all the leaders getting out of their limosines etc. He had a pair of binoculars with him and was sitting is his car looking at Boris Yeltsin when he looked up and saw a Police sniper (I think it was police) staring directly back at him through a rifle scope Big grin.

Banff's airport is a grass strip and is limited/private use. I think you have to live in Banff or get permission to use the airport from the national parks service. Anyways Banff isn't much closer to Kananaskis Village then Calgary (maybe 15 minutes difference).

Forget the planes - go into town and shoot pictures of the riots that are going to happen! Make some big money selling the pics to magazines.

The townspeople of Kanaskas must be messing their pants at the thought of all the damage their town is going to suffer.

I live in San Francisco and would like to tell you our experience with Gorbachevs' visit here when he was the Russian leader. I was passing the airport, and since I had my camera with me, I thought it was a terrific photo op. The Russians had one Il-62, Il-76, and Tu-154. They all left in fairly close sequence. Then Air Force One (B707) left shortly after. It was hard to tell which made the most smoke, the Il-62 or the B707! Another visitor here is the Canadian Air Force A310 - an awsome looking aircraft!

All of the Traffic will be into YYC, It's the only airport near that is capable of such traffic. The airport in banff is almost even too small for Cessna's to take off and land at.

The humour about the G-8 is that Calgary didn't really want to nave the summit due to the demonstations from the World Petrolium Congress. Since Kananaska's has limited access it is believe most of the protest will be held in Calgary. It'll certainly be interesting to see the variety of aircraft here in Calgary Smile.

Guys, guys, guys (especially Allee):

I didn't post this message on the AVIATION forum for you to express your antiglobalist and political points of view, but for other purpose. Take it into consideration. Thank you!

All of the air traffic will be into YYC. As said earlier in this thread, it's the only airport near Kananaskis that can handle that kind of air traffic. I think it will be interesting to see all those different aircraft. However I too am worried that access to good spotting areas will be cut-off by security. But if they use runway 34 alot, I'll be able to see them go right over my house on approach!!
