Rare Or Missing Aircraft At Your Airport

Tue Jul 24, 2001 11:01 pm

As spotters and photographers we like as much variety in airplanes as we can get. What aircraft types are rarely seen or even completely missing at your airport? Are there any that will soon be gone (endangered species)?

In Montreal (YUL), my home base, Airbus aircraft are most commonly seen however there are some that we never see unless they come in on a diversion or some special charter, such as ;

A300 (FedEx & ICC use them at Mirabel only)
A321s (Air Canada have theirs coming this fall)
A340-200s (on rare occasion by Sabena)
MD-11s (KLM's were the last - now they use 747s)

The older generation of aircraft types (727, 747-100/200, DC-10, 707, DC-8 are now completely gone from YUL)

Rare aircraft - 777s, 757s, A340s - all of which either come in rarely (less than once a week) or represent only a small percentage of the aircraft flown in and out of the airport on a daily basis. Only BA & MS use the 777 for example. Only little Air St Pierre uses Atr-42s once or twice a week. Cubana is the only IL-62 user.. Olympic is the only regular user of the A340-300 (AC's comes in on occasion but not regularly. A330s have replaced all their ex-A340 routes) Only Air Canada flies 767s into Montreal albeit very often and their 747-400 rarely comes here and isn't scheduled out of Montreal.

Planes soon to be rare - L-1011 (Air Transat's are either gone now or about to be).. Air Canada's 737s, DC-9s & F-28s which will slowly be going but Northwest & US Airways still use DC-9s to YUL. I guess NW and US's DC-9s which wil also go over the next year or two.

Anyways - other YULers can add to this or correct me.. how about your airport - what's not there, rare or soon to be rare?

Hi Doug,

Actually American is flying a lot of F100's into Dorval right now but other than that I certainly would love to see more of the planes that you mentioned. We don't seem to get any F28's anymore either. We could do with a few less Air Canada A320's and Air Nova Dash-8's and some more DC10's, MD11's, and perhaps even some more ATR's other than the twice weekly Air St. Pierre flight. A lot of people seem to like all the Convair's that we see at YUL. Maybe we could trade one of those with a few exotic CRJ's for a IL86 and a plane to be named later  Smile

It would be nice for NW to use something other than a DC9 on at least one of their flights. Occasionally they will substitute a 727 or an A320 but not nearly enough. American's doing pretty well, however, with a mix of F100's, 737-800's, and MD80's. An occasional Swissair or KLM MD11 subsitution would be much appreciated too.

I thought YUL got AA,UA, and DL 757s. Also with the trijets, not many airports will get them as the only L1011 we get is ATA, Delta stopped L1011 service from our airport about a month ago. With the DC-10, we only get Fed-ex and Sun Country after AA retired them. With the MD-11, we get AA,JAL, and Fed-Ex. I would like to see some more A300's as the only ones we get are UPS, and if we are exteremely lucky, we will get an AA diversion from MIA, but that is severely doubtfull.

Felix - The AA F-100s slipped my mind... don't know where my head was at?

Blink182 - the only 757s we get are Canada 3000, Air Transat and occasionally Mexicana.. Even these are not that common. UA doesn't fly here they only code share on AC flights. AA sent 757s one summer from Miami but they were short lived. DL used to send 757s here but after Open Skys their entire Montreal operation was downgraded to Express carriers and a twice daily MD-80 service to Atlanta.. rather sad.. the DL 727s, 757s, 767s and L1011s vanished.

Here in POS Russian types are very rare as Cubana no longer serves us. The Ukrainian AN-124 comes occasionally though. 777s and A340s do not serve POS either, neither do DC10s and 727s now only come in the form of Amerijet freighters.

The common types are 737-800s of BWIA and North American, MD80s of BWIA and ALM, 757s of AA and NA, A330s of Canada 3000 and Skyservice, A320s of AC and SSV and Dash 8s aplenty of BWEE Express, LIAT, Tobago Express and Caribbean Star.

Hop to it, fly for life!

Over here in BRU/EBBR (Belgium: Brussels Airport), the only aircraft I've only seen once (!) is a 777. I don't remember the operator, I only know that I saw it, taking off from Rwy 25R on Tue, july 10th 2001, at around 7 o'clock in the evening.

I sure would like to see some more 777's, because all the American carriers over here use 767's (or 757's once in a while, operated by CO). However, I also like the 767, but I sure would like to see more 777's!!

In Montreal, I believe US AIrways may be starting to use a F100 on their morning flight in August to PHL once the D328 flight starts. American also use them sometimes.

Continental sometimes use a B737-700 into Montreal. I have seen them on several occasions.

For B767's the only airline I see in the future is Royal Air Maroc.

It's amazing how so many comon aircraft are rarely seen at Dorval. Even the B757-200, which the only airline we see at Dorval is C3. An aircraft I would like to see at Dorval more often along with the A321.

At Sea-Tac in Seattle, we've never had either A330 or A340. Perhaps eventually we'll see one if NWA or SAS decide to send one here. No more L1011s and MD11s seem to be quite rare.

As for large planes, we get a few daily 747s, 777s, and NWA DC10s. There is also an occasional Aeroflot jet.

For mid sized, lots of 757s and 767s.

Smaller: all the usual Boeings, MDs, and Airbuses.

Missing/rare at CLE:

Widebodies except for the A300 (FedEx and UPS fly them)
DC-9 is going slowly from Northwest, but we have a few MidEx flights, too.
EMB-120 -- Continental moved them all out of CLE to IAH. Comair doesn't fly them in at all.
Dash-8 -- although Air Ontario seems to be flying them in this summer, Piedmont stopped coming in.
Dornier 328

Lots more -- let's just say here it's mostly 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, ERJ, ERJ, ERJ, ERJ, 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, 737, ERJ.... Run of the mill CO stuff. Beech 1900s and ATR-42s sprinkled in... The rest are mostly MD-80s and CRJs.
See my webpage for more details.

Everything but the new twin engines!

Seriously we get a semi decent variety at Sea-Tac but nothing like 15 or so years ago. In one or two hours you could see all three wide body types, 707, 720's, DC-8s and even the occasional Convair, as well as all the T-Tails and 737s you wanted. Now its 737 after 737 puncuated by the occasional 757, 767 or A319(UA). The international arrivals in the mornings bring in the 777, 747, DC-10s.

I feel sorry for you. I thought that BRU/EBBR was pretty bad, but, when looking at things at CLE, BRU/EBBR seems to be pretty good after all. Maybe I should stop complaining about it?

Hey Doug:

Rare (or unseen) birds at MSY:
A340: only seen one, the prototype was here 4-odd years ago for one night.
A330: TAM-Brazil brought two charters in about a year or so ago. None since.
A321: none.
747 all series: very occasional charters, usually around Super Bowl-time.
767-400: a couple of DL equipment changes.
L-1011: No more DL  Crying . Occasional ATA charter.
DC-10: very rare.
707: none.

EWR (Newark, NJ) has an astounding variety of aircraft, including some old freighters. The latter include Super DC-8s (both -60 and -70 series), L-1011, 727. Last year I believe I saw a 707 approaching, but as the plane was far away, I cannot confirm this. The whine of the engines, I am sure, was some version of the JT-3D.

We have some unusual private aircraft, including the Forbes gold-painted 727. The Saudi royal fleet, Antonov 124s, and Air Force One make occasional appearances.

The most unusual visitor was a Hispaniola Airlines 707 that landed here in the 1980s, apparently abandoned. I never heard what happened to the old bird.

Some of the rarities I have seen at SYR:

UPS DC-8-73 (normally it is just 757s)

Emery Worldwide and Flying Tiger Line DC-8's

NW DC-9-15 (i like the look of the baby DC-9)

Delta Connection Dornier 328JET

Comair CRJ-100

other wise is it just the run of the mill airport with all the commuter types, Lots of Beech 1900s and Dash-8s. 737s dominate the ramps some DC-9s and MD-80s. Fedex and Delta continue the use of the old school 727s its always nice to hear the whine of jt-8's

The planes I get tired to see here:
-Swissair A330
-Air France 747-400
-KLM 747-300
-BA 777-200
Would be great to see some changes
