LY To Fly The YYZ-LAX Route?

Tue Jul 24, 2001 11:51 pm

I found this on the Canadian Aviation News section of the Canadian Aeronautical Communication website. It says that "In November, the airline (LY) is planning to exercise its fifth freedom route rights and offer seats between Toronto and Los Angeles".
To see the original go to: http://www.canairradio.com/pianews.html
It's near the bottom of the page, under "June 13".

Anyone has any further info on this? What a/c are they planning to use on the route, and how many flights a week are there going to be? Does that mean that LY will stop flying TLV-JFK/EWR-LAX and all flights from TLV to LAX will go through YYZ?

Probably a codeshare with AA that flies this route. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If it were a codeshare thing, than it wouldn't mention fifth-freedom rights. It would be similar to what Cathay Pacific does on JFK-YVR.

Why would anyone want to go through all of the BS of flying on LY if they can just get on any of AC's flights, or AA's and C3's flights? For that matter why do they have FF rights here? Get out of the Canadian market, and let that Canadian/US airlines fly it. I'd like to see what they would say if AC or C3 wanted to fly TLV-JFK.

Usually 5th Freedom rights are reciprocal and if not greater access into the foreign market would have been negotiated in turn for El Al's getting onward rights from YYZ.. El Al gets Toronto-Los Angeles and in turn Air Canada gets onward rights from Tel Aviv, or rights into another Israeli city or rights to Tel Aviv from several Canadian cities... I guess AC has opted not to use them so far but they could theoretically do something like Tel Aviv-Bombay or Tel Aviv-Singapore if that was negotiated. I remember BA getting 5th freedom rights from Montreal & Toronto in turn for AC's greater access into the UK market. BA never used their rights from Canadian cities but AC did go further into the UK market. It all depends on their business strategy needs I suppose.

Hey Slawko!
You seem (judging from your reply to this post and others) to have a very bad opinion on LY, why is that? Did you have some kind of a bad experience with them, or you just don't like any non-North American airline flying North American routes (CX JFK-YVR, PIA YYZ-JFK, for example)?

hello, think about it,
ELAL has no money thanks to arafat's intifada......causing the ultimate drop of tourism to israel. they have been dropping unprofitable routes like flies, as well as certain aircraft, dont forget to mention they are totally wiping out their first class on every aircraft. now if you think ELAL will even open a route in the next few months there is no chance. Here in LA, there isnt even a year round flight to israel via elal. they come here only in the summer with their 777s.....

ELAL flies year round service to LAX but during the other seasons North American flies via JFk.

chepos,

they do not fly year round service to LAX.
but of course, NAA, which part of they own does the LAX-JFK flight to connect.
i dont call that elal year round service to LAX as u can take any other airline to connect to JFK in order to take ELAL from there.

Perhaps the reason they are looking at YYZ-LAX is that when they do restart the LAX route again, they may want to try and make a few more bucks on the YYZ-LAX portion because it is a route between two countries (LY cannot sell tickets on just the JFK-LAX portion of the TLV-LAX flight).

Well, here is the answer: most passengers on air Canada flight to Tel- Aviv are from the US.
When air Canada ask for more flights to Israel, Israeli authorities said no since they say air Canada is "taking"
The bread and butter of ELAL from the US market.
Then the Canadians threatened to take ELAL's right to fly over Canadian land on its way to NYC.
In order to solve this argument a new contract were signed allowing air Canada to increase the number of flights to Israel but also giving ELAL the fifth freedom.
The aircraft that will be used on this route is 767/200 ER with the new c/c configuration (not the business first, yet)

Hi 4X-ELD!
Do you know how many flights a week are there going to be?
Can you tell me more about the new 762 configuration?
Thanks.

Yeah blame it all on the Arabs...GIVE ME A BREAK!

I have nothing against ElAl and hope that there TLV YYZ route does well, I saw their 777 last week and it looked very nice, but I do have a problem with any airline using FF rights to fly a route such as the YYZ-LAX run. EL Al has no business trying to run a North American trans-con route. That said, I heard today that this route will be given to North American airlines, ElAl's north american subsidiary (the own 25%). This at least is a north american airline flying a north american route.

Slawko,
with u mentioning NAA using that route that makes more sense.
ALso,
ELAL has always been in the shithouse, but think about it.....arafat's intifada, no one who doesnt have to go to Israel now doesnt go.
Because of the violence.
That causes a huge drop in tourism lately to israel from all over, causing elal to lose lots of money.
They have stopped lots of routes, put aircraft out of service, etc.
other airlines also have temporarily dropped routes to israel because of that too.
think about it  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
there are other factors that may have played a role too, but the main most damaging one now for elal is the intifada.
