San Diego (SAN) Airport Info.

I'm interested in learning more about SAN and was wondering if anyone had any websites or information about SAN regarding what airlines fly there, what destinations it serves, and how "busy" it is, and anything else regarding it. Thanks a lot!

I was there for some holiday spending in San Diego. Nice view from Mission Beach!
A lot of dc9 and 727 (for me as dutch not a familiar aircraft anymore) flew above me and had a turn above the sea to fly back into the land.

I wish i be there right now :'(

SAN has only one runway, and there is no space for expansion. Hope they decide soon what they are going to do if the airport reaches its maximum capacity.
TIJ is a possibility for a major international airport.

In the next ten years all the environmental impact studies will be complete and there will be a decision whether or not to build a terminal on the north side of the airport, probably to be used by Southwest.

There is some room to expand. When and if the Marine Corp Recuiting Depot (MCRD) ever leaves, SAN can expand to the north (extend the north taxiway for the full length of runway). Our new mayor is looking into the possiblity of placing the new airport just east of Miramar.

I'm not sure, but I heard Air Canada was planning on dropping their Toronto service. Anyways, SAN has an excellent approach when the planes fly over the city. The airport is so close to the high rises that I was looking in the windows on the 13th floor of a 20 storey building!

Spyderz: Where did you hear that AC was planning on dropping YYZ? That seems odd; I thought that the route was doing well. Oh well; I think they'd have more luck with YVR if they tried it.

There is talk of a new regional-planning authority in San Diego which will undertake the task of siting a new airport (or so it has been said). Miramar, or that region, I still think is obviously the best place for a new airport, but alas, there are too many ignorant NIMBY's around there. If not somewhere near Miramar, then Tijuana will pick up San Diego's overflow traffic once SAN reaches capacity. The idea of an airport at Camp Pendleton is not too bright, and I hope no further county resources are put forth trying to build one there.

In the immediate future, plans for SAN include the development of the land immediately west of Terminal 2, recently purchased by the Port. Developments there include an employee parking lot, and aircraft parking aprons. This may mean that SAN may get some more interesting aircraft from the airlines, as they may be tempted overnight some more here as the Port does not charge for overnight parking. I believe that environmental review for the terminal on the north side of the airport is complete or nearing completion; it should get built within a few years. Maybe then, Southwest will be able to go a little farther towards living up to their statement that they would soon have 100 departures a day from SAN (in the past few years however, the number has only increased by 2 or 3 to just under 80).

Does anyone know why the option of building into the ocean to expand the runway, similar to SFO isn't discussed? Is the airport too low compared to sea level?

Maybe a stupid question, but what is a NIMBY?
And was there in Miramar not a airport yet? (navy, tom cat or so  Big grin )?
If yes, is it that airport where at the gate some old navy planes were standing? I entered SAN there last year i thought, en route to La Jolla.
(And bought some groceries at miramar mall, so thats why i am concluding).

I think SAN is too far inland to expand into the ocean. You'd have to get rid of Point Loma and the penninsula. If anyone else has an idea on this matter, I'd love to hear it.

As for an airport in Tijuana, would people really want to go there for a flight?

Have you been to San Diego yet??!!! I really suggest you do go there I had a wonderful time and it's one of the cities onmy list where I could spend the rest of my life in.....

Destinations......

Well I can't say I'm an expert in that area. I KNOW that there is a British Airways flight from SAN to the UK. I saw a 744, BA, depart last summer while I was there. Awesome sight.

I do know that there are MILLIONS of shuttle flights up and down the california coast to almost every Californian city that has a population over 100,000. Alot of these are ex-PSA routes, picked up by USAir and then United, Southwest, AA, CO, etc.

I know SAN has flight to Kahului, Maui (OGG) and Honolulu, Oahu (HNL)

I'd also wager many flights into Canada and Mexico. but SAN is VERY VERY busy!!

They;d have alot more int'l flight were it not for the fact that the city has grown around SAN and it has nowhere to expand. Miramar was a option a while ago, but I've lost track of what happened there.

Go to San Diego, you'll never wanna leave.

Oh before I forget....SAN isn't exactly the best spotting place. Why? Lighting conditions. At the times when the sun is at your back,it is cloudy.

But you love that cloudy when you walk outside and feel it....ahhhh...humidity, and a cool ocean breeze...love it.

The best time to spot would be from about oh 11AM to about 5PM, 3PM in the Winter. Because the clouds come in in the evening after 5, sometimes before....you you have a limited amount of time to get some good shots.

But overall worth it!!!

Visit the old PSA terminal, I didn't have a chance to.

Your post was real informative about photo taking! I live in LA and I live and go to school at the University of San Diego about 5 minutes north of SAN and I've been meaning to go to SAN to take pictures because I feel they are lacking on airliners.net. The 11am and 5pm lighting technique sounds like a plan. Thanks!

And YES, San Diego is the best place to spend the rest of your life. The ocean breeze is like no other!!! Once the marine layer clears by noon, its brilliant blue skies and swaying green palm trees!!! Gotta love it!!!

QANTAS747-438-- Please check out my post on the photo requests forum of aircraft at SAN. I have listed a number of aircraft/airlines operating at Lindbergh Field that aren't yet in the database. I'd especially like to see photos of the Hawaiian DC-10 and the Air Canada A319 at SAN. If you can make it down there in the morning between 8:00 and 10:00, you should be able to photograph a number of interesting aircraft with morning departures and midmorning arrivals.

Some of the info provided by Aloha 737-200 is incorrect. There are only two daily direct flights to Mexico and the one flight to Toronto. US Airways has no inter-California flights any more, and neither does Continental. There is no flight to Kahluii.(No, I can't spell correctly)

Trvlr: Your knowledge about SAN always impresses me.
I'll try to email you next time I'm in San Diego for lunch at the Windsock.(Probably November or December)

456: NIMBY means "Not in my backyard", i.e. Don't build an airport anywhere close to where I live...

The mayor of SD is looking to go east of Miramar ( huge open area, yet hilly) and not at Miramar itself, just to clarify.
That would be a pisser if AC quit its service to Toronto.

Can someone provide more info about the "east of Miramar" plan? To me that sounds like it would be somewhere in the middle of the Scripps Ranch neighborhood.

The East of Miramar plan really isn't a plan, more than it is a theory. So far I think that at this point people are only talking about the possibility of the candidacy of East Miramar as a site for a new airport; nothing I think has been said as to how the actual airport would be built and how big it would be, as well as how it would affect Miramar MCAS', Montgomery Field's, and I assume probably Gillespe (sp?) Field's operations. If the new regional planning authority is created, however (which I sure hope it is, as it seems like the only way to get things moving in San Diego concerning the airport), we should see a lot more info on this option appear.

I just formulated a quick question/theory in regards to the option of siting a new airport on the site of the current Miramar MCAS. I know that the the current alignment of the main runway (6L/24R I believe), would send aircraft on commercial flights over some of the residential areas of University City and La Jolla. However, what would the flight path of departures and arrivals from an airport at the Miramar MCAS look like if the runway were repositioned to a 9L/27R configuration such as Lindbergh Field's? What would be the differences, if any, to the landing and takeoff procedures and flight patterns for planes using an arrangement like this out of Miramar instead of the current 6L/24R configuration?

Just a quick thought on that option that I had. I'll get back to it later. Thank you very much if anyone can provide any insight whatsoever as to my question.

An airport nmby Miramar would be great. Much more centralized than Oceanside or Tijuana area, and even downtown maybe. But, like I've said, this is a conservative area, so NIMBYism is widespread through the area.

Hmmm....sorry guys! I must still have a bit of outdated SAN info in my head. My apologies.

As far as Kahului....I know that there WILL be one here soon, though I wasn't sure is Hawaiian had started theirs yet.

But as far as I know, both Hawaiian AND Aloha are going to offer OGG-SAN flights very, very soon.

As far as Canada/Mexico....yeah don't know much in that area. I kinda figured there's probably be a bit more than there is, but again, my bad.

I do know SAN is very congested with US domesic flights though.

11 AM is about the time you should GET THERE. It'll start clearing up about there, and on a goo day it might already be so, but yes San Diego is great!!

Spotting at LAX is actually pretty good, but if I recall right, it was pretty smoggy until the evening, a fial to remember which time though. Sorry.

So if CO and US have dropped their Cali-shuttle fligths, then who picked 'em up? Southwest? Big grin

Yes, it is only a preliminary idea to build the new airport east of Miramar. Whats good about this location is that it is a huge open area to where there should be limited opposition against the airport. On a side note, I'm so sick and tired of this nimby crap. Everyone complains that flights are being delayed and/or cancelled, and one of the major reasons is due to congested airports. However, when it comes time to build these new airports or to expand existing ones, no one wants it to happen. Just my two cents.

Personally if the airport were to be moved to Miramar, there would be no noise problem for the surrounding residents. Todays airliners would be at several thousand feet once they have departed over the coastline residents. Hell, the Marine helicopters are ten times louder then any airliner that would come into this airport if ever built. So, I feel that they wouldn't have to realign the runways.

Yeah, miramar is kinda out thee a bit. Sure there's some residential areas nearby but it's pretty sparse once you get to Miramar , if I recall correctly. But I could be wrong it HAS been a year.  Big grin

Not to mention you might see sage IV noise regulations soon so noise problems should just about be over with.

Real sad because I kinda liked the old roar of the 727, ah but that's just me.  Big grin

If they put the airport East of Miramar, then isn't that pretty incovienent to get to? The 15 freeway goes through the area, but nothing drops you off near there. All you have out there is Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside, and Santee... not the biggest of towns. My opinion is that that would be real inconvienent.

Also, what about that military base on the top of Coronado? Could that be used?

Too bad theres not too much room to play with.

Trlvr: When did the Port Authority buy the land west of terminal two? On the SAN website, part of the masterplan shows the development of gates on the west side of the terminal. Are there no plans to build gates on the west side of the pier in the near future? New aircraft/employee parking spaces isn't a bad idea though. Who knows, there could be a new photography spot...

Aloha 737-200: I haven't heard anything yet but rumors about a Kahului route. It would be nice to have one, of course. Inter-California routes are primarily flown by United Shuttle and Southwest. American flies to San Jose for the time being...

And a general question, it seems to me that noise from a commercial airport would be less obnoxious than from a military airport. More flights perhaps, but better noise regulations. Newer commercial jets are much quieter than those bloody marine choppers.

The land west of Terminal two was granted to them once the area was vacated by the Navy, or Marines, can't remember.

It would not be a inconvenience for people to drive to an airport that would be located east of Miramar. What would be an inconvenience would to drive down to the border to catch a flight or to take a high-speed rail out to the desert (both are possible options for a new airport).

There is also a Delta 762 that leaves at 7:15a.

This fall, Alaska will start bringing in several 737-900s a day. These flights leave SAN around 6AM, 10AM, and 5PM, and arrive at SAN 9:25AM, 4:30PM, and 11:21PM. Also, Delta will be upgrading one if its ATL flights from a 757 to a 767-300, which arrives at SAN at 2:30PM and depart at 3:35PM.

Additionally, I think during the fall or winter the British Airways 777 flight will be retimed. It is scheduled to arrive around 1:30PM and leave around 4PM.

Lindy Field: The land purchase was finalized very recently. If you go to the Port's website, and to the "press releases" site, then you will find several press items on the land acquisition.

But, you say that the BA 777 only needs 2 hrs 20 minutes for a turn around? Isnt that REALLY fast?

Qantas747-438 -- Glad that I could help. More concrete info is of course available at the Port Authority website. When you go to take photos, try to get some of the various Delta aircraft in the various liveries. Use the airliners.net database to get a sense of good locations for photography and to see what's missing from the database. For example, no American 767-300s. Best of luck with weather and successful uploading!

Trvlr--I'll check out the port authority website momentarily. Any other changes planned in the fall schedule?

Lindy Field: Yes actually...but it's mostly seasonal stuff. AA is actually dropping the 763 to Chicago and Paris this fall; odd to see that it was only a two-month thing. Continental is also downgrading it's schedule to Newark and Houston: most of the 738s to IAH will be downgraded to Md-80s, to the point where each day there will be 4 MD-80s and 1 738 to Houston. This looks like it is only seasonal, however. Also, Newark will get downgraded from 2 738s, a 757, and a 73G to 3 73Gs and a 738, but the new 4th daily flight will be kept. This also looks like it is seasonal.

Northwest is also seasonally downgrading their schedule to SAN, replacing all 757s with A320s, which SAN will only see for the next few months probably. I was interested to see that MEM was not downgraded to an A319, meaning that there is probably reasonable demand on the route.

American and United will be about the same...I think UA is changing their equipment to mix yet again though. At the beggining of the summer, 4 of the 5 757 flights to DEN were changed into I think 5 737 and A320 flights...now however, UA's schedule to DEN will consist of 4 757s, an A320, and a 737-300, effectively eliminating UA 727s from San Diego.

Also, I forgot to mention that Frontier will also introduce the A319 to San Diego when they replace on of their 3 daily 737-300 flights with the aircraft in the fall.

That's about it I think...if there's any other changes I'll post them.

I assume you are referring to NAS North Island...to my knowledge North Island is still a major base in the PACFLT of the USN. The last time I was in SAN, in 1999, it was fully active and CVN-74, USS John C. Stennis was in port, since North Island is its base. I have not heard of any plans to close North Island.

It's always disappointing to learn of service downgrades in San Diego, but the traffic is very seasonal. Interesting then that Delta is adding a fourth daily 767 flight. Delta hasn't flown so widebodies into San Diego daily since the late 1980s or early 1990s. Probably one of the reasons they are my favorite major US airline.

I hope that someone will photograph Continental's and Northwest's 757s and United's 727s at San Diego since the photos of these aircraft in their current liveries at San Diego in the airliners.net database aren't particularly good. (No disrespect intended to the various photographers)

Don't forget San Diego's newest nonstop destination...San Antonio, Texas...coming this fall on Southwest.

Bit-o-trivia,
Post December 1978, Braniff printed a system timetable with a nonstop San Diego - San Antonio flight that never operated. It only took 20+ years to takeoff, via the airline that played a part in Braniff's demise.

Will be headin' west to my favorite city, S.D.

To the best of my knowledge, the original Braniff International never operated to San Diego...

It's about time that SAN got a direct flight to San Antonio. Now we're just waiting for resumption of nonstop Miami and Mexico City service... and introduction of Baltimore service.

Noticed something interesting today...

I was looking at some real-time flight arrivals to see when one of my friend's flight was arriving at SAN, and I saw that Aerolitoral (Aeromexico-affiliated regional airline) had a flight from Mexicali to San Diego. I would have assumed that this was a one-off flight, but the flight number seemed to be one that an airline would use for normally scheduled flights (many airline have flight numbers in the 9000s for special ferry/diversion/etc flights). So I checked oag.com and saw that this flight was on the schedule for SAN indefinitely. What strikes me about this is that it seems like AM/Aerolitoral just spontaneously decided to start this flight, without any press release, or even an updating of their own schedules. The aircraft is a Saab 340.

It will be interesting to see whether this flight will continue, or whether it is just some fluke at OAG that showed it as a regularly scheduled flight.

All controversy aside....I like SAN the way it is...economics aside, it is a really cool airport. I love sitting on my front porch and being able to watch planes on finals in the distance. And nothing beats the Windsock, sitting right off the runway with a cold brew in hand watching all the action. Would be cooler if more widebodies made there way into SAN, but I'm not complaining....very convienient location, clean, and great views. My vote goes to keep SAN right where it is.

I think that a Mexicali-San Diego turboprop flight makes a lot of sense. Aaron, see if you can confirm that! I also think a flight to Yuma, AZ would work well.

Yep, I guess Braniff's scheduling folks in Dallas got ahead of themselves. It was about the time Braniff realized they bit off more than they could chew with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978.
