Now That UAL/US Is Dead, Will AA Buy New 757's?

Wed Jul 25, 2001 2:54 pm

After the announcement of Americans aquisition of 15 new 767's, I wondered why AA wasn't getting new 757's. The 767's were purchased to replace TWA's 767's to have engine commonality with the rest of AA's fleet. With American's 757's being RR powered, I didn't think TWA's 757's would mix. Someone in A.net explained that the reason was that AA was waiting to see what would happen with the UAL/UA merger. AA was to take over/purchase the 757's from US as part of a "support" angle of the merger. Now that the merger seems dead, will AA buy new RR 757's to replace TWA P&W powered 757's? And if so, could they possibly be 757-300's?

Very curious to hear what everyone thinks.

May be not, I believe they were simply going to swap their 757's with UAL because of engine differences but I'm not positive. AA will probably purchase more 757's in the future but probably not as a result of the UA-USA-AA deal falling through.
Go Cubs!

Didn't they buy 20 last year?

Yes Greg, but that was well before the takeover. I was curious if they were going to replace TWA's P&W powered 757's with RR powered ones.

American still has quite a few 757-200's on option, I don't know how many, so it is possible that they convert those into firm orders. But if they want to do that they'd better not wait too long because Boeing could announce that the production of the 757 will end. In other words, the 757 might already be out of production in the mid 2000's. The first one that was built is almost 20, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 757 is out of production before 2010. Remember the 727, it went out of production in 1984 exactly 20 years after the first one entered service.
I doubt TWA 757's and 767's, which are PW powered, will be repainted in AA's silver scheme. Some company will have to buy them second hand.

While it is possible that Boeing would end 757 production after a 20 year run, I doubt it...they just introduced the 753. Even though it is off to a slow start, so was the 200. After the dust settles, the economy improves, and a pilot contract signed...then you will probably see AA convert some options to firm orders..and I think it might be for a few 753's for hi-density routes, and start cutting back a little on frequencies.

I thought I read that they allowed some 737 options expire recently...interesting!
Perhaps saving a little cash or some other reason.
