NW 747 Made Forced Landing In Northern BC

A Northwest 747 (they didn't say which variant, but I'd hazard a guess that it was a -400) was forced to land at the airport near Fort St. John, a small city of 17,000 in northeastern BC. The reason was smoke in the cabin, and the plane was bound for DTW from ANC. This is interesting, because I didn't know that Ft. St. John would have a runway capable of handling a large plane like a 747.

A dog had to be taken out of the baggage hold and was allowed to ride in the cabin for the rest of the trip, since the ventilation system was shut down in the baggage hold. I guess the dog must've been glad it got to ride in the same cabin as it's owner!

FORT ST. JOHN, British Columbia, July 25 (Reuters) - An overheated oven forced a Boeing 757 with 177 people on board to make an emergency landing at a small northern British Columbia airport, an official said on Wednesday.

The Northwest Airlines Corp.(NasdaqNM:NWAC - news) flight from Anchorage to Detroit was forced to land at Fort St. John, about 600 km (370 miles) northwest of Edmonton, Alberta, late on Tuesday with a report of smoke in the cabin, airport manager Alvin Maier said.

No injuries were reported, but the 170 passengers and seven-member crew had to remain on the aircraft for three hours as mechanics traced the problem to an oven used to reheat meals, Maier said.

The aircraft was allowed to continue its flight on Wednesday morning.

The 757 sounds correct. NW quit flying 747 through ANC a couple of years ago (when ANC was dropped as an intermediate stop on the polar route).

Thanks for straightening this out, guys.

The 757 makes sense because of another thing: YXJ's longest runway measures only 6900 ft. in length - I doubt a 747 could even take off from a runway that short.

I found an updated version of that story. Like the Yahoo! article posted, It does indeed say that it was a 757 this time around.

You are roung they take the 757 2 times a day look in the timetable!!!!!!

Great airline, 747's with problems all over the shop and now a 757.

And don't forget that 727 that someone has pics of dumping fuel over Boston because it had to make an emergency landing

A 747 could make it out of a 6900ft runway without too much trouble. I mean you wouldn't need to rip all the seats out or anything!!

Hey, the toaster in my home often got overheated. And there often smoke everywhere. My point is, this is just a precautious measure to make an emergency landing. NW's 757 should be ok. I love them all. I am looking forward to see they change from 747 to A330. NWA should be great.

P.S. However, I hate their DC-10 for sure. They engine noise just scared me out last time when I flew from SEA to DTW back in 1996.
