Chicago-ORD Hotels- Best Airfield View

Thu Jul 26, 2001 5:19 am

I'm spending a couple days in Chicago and want to book a room with the best view of the runway action. Your recommendations are appreciated.

Would the Hilton on site count?

1.The O'Hare Hilton
2. There is a Hotel (Comfort??) just off Mannheim rd on the SE corner of the airport area. It used to be a HJ. Maybe someone can help me remember the cross street.

Westin Rosemont

and The Marriott SUITES O'Hare (note there are TWO Marriott O'Hare, one on North River Road (suites) and the REGULAR one off of Cumberland Avenue and the Kennedy Expressway....

The Hilton *really* isn't that great of view unless you are on one of the top 3 floors.

Looks like my choices are limited due to price. The Clarion hotel Barcelo on N. Cumberland Ave. is $85 a night and looks like a highrise from the picture. The front desk person was absolutely clueless about the room views. She said they are 3 miles away from O'hare so they have no view of the airport at all. As a matter of fact,,,all the hotels I called were clueless about my "room with a view" request! very frustrating.
My other, more expensive options seem to be:
Hyatt Regency O'hare, Rosemont,
Sheraton Gateway,
Westin Rosemont (maybe)

-which one of these would you recommend? The Clarion is obviously most desireable for price.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Elk Grove which is about a mile and a half northwest directly in the path of the longest runway the 13000 foot runway that runs northwest and southeast.

I have stayed there twice. One time I was there, the planes were taking off directly over the hotel. The second time I was there the planes were landing over the hotel and I got good video tapes of them. This is the runway where most of the international flights land, i got videos of a China Cargo 747-400, Korean Air and Japan Air 744s, an ANA 777 among several United 744s and 772s. At night a lot of cargo 747s came in. I recall seeing Atlas Air, Polar and Northwest in one of the custom painted cargo 742s.

You can't see any action going on out on the field, but you are in direct path of Chicago's busiest runway.

Oh and the bonus is this Holiday Inn gives you a free breakfast too (not a Continental one) but you get free eggs/bacon etc. There is a great view of the planes landing from the eating area because it has a lot of glass.

The Sheraton offers OK views... it's in a wierd location though, off of Devon Ave and Mannheim road. The hotel isn't that big, but you'll definitely see the tails of the aircraft.

The Clarion on Cumberland is OK if you like to see them approach...

The Hyatt O'Hare doesn't allow any views, except for the approach...

The Westin would offer you a great view of the North-Field and south field... pretty unobstructed.

and just across the street is the Marriott Suites O'Hare, and if you get a high floor, you can get a decent view of the south field.

Hyatt Rosemont is on the corner of North River Road and Higgins I think... no where near any good spotting, unless traffic is coming in on 22L
