Rules For This Forum?

Thu Jul 26, 2001 10:13 am

I would like to know if there is a FULL list of all the rules on this foirum ??, I mean I've just had another posting deltered because my reply to the 1st anniversary of the Concorde crash post I replied.

I will never forget that day in Las Vegas.

Johan is now deleting more and more posts, yet at the same time post by people like CXCPA that are just 100% wrong, are allowed to stay.

I also see more and more complaints that photos are rejected yet you can find photos that the quality is so bad I would not even keep them myself, let alone send them to this website.

This forum is the BEST of the best in terms of aviation but it seems to me that Johan is getting so big on the fact that it is that he does not seem to notice how many people he's annoying.

I know he will delete this , but I just have to say it.

All you have to remember about this forum is not to say anything bad about Airbus, because a lot of people here get really uptight when you compare Boeing to Airbus.

Good Morning Daryl or Hkgspotter1,

the rules are simple . . . keep it aviation-related, and keep it objective.

There are lots of awful pictures from the past . . . but I personally found that recently-accepted images are of far superior quality. Perhaps it is time for Johan to comb through all those previously-accepted pixs and "re-accept" all those of a certain quality or rarity.

And sorry Daryl, many of us who thoroughly enjoyed the immense work put in by Johan in managing DO NOT think that he is getting to big for the job . . . it is free-loaders like you who seem to get too big for your computer's screen.

After writing that one should keep to the rules and keep it aviation related and objective, you tell HKGSpotter1 that he is a freeloader and that he's getting too big for his computers screen. Do you see my point?

I will add my voice to those that believe many of the photos are of bad quality, in terms of subjects and the photo itself. There are lots and lots of brilliant photos and I love this site. However, as with all things, there are places where improvements can be found. This is natural, and without feedback, things will never improve. Think about that before you go bashing people who voice their opinions about improving things.
No-one said this site is stupid and badly managed, because it is not. There are just places that can be improved that's all.

I don't think that Johan has deleted the posts. There has been some problems on the server Airliners.Net is on. Due to these problems, lots of posts have been deleted, not by Johan or someone else.

1740 days idle. Beat that.

Regarding those "bad quality" photos, you can go to the main page and click on "Read how to upload your photos" and pay special attention to item #22 which states:

I've found many photos with lower quality than mine in the database. Still, my photos were rejected. Why?!

We have increased our quality rejection level many times since we started out. We accepted almost any photo that was sent to us a few years ago and has since then increased our standard and now only accept photos with high quality. This means that there might be photos in the database that was added some time ago that would not have passed the screening process today. We try to delete any low quality shots that we find but it's a lot of photos and I'm sure there are still some in there.

We also have lower rejection levels for very unusual photos as well as older ones.

Finally, have you checked the color depth and resolution of your monitor lately? If you do not use true color (32bit) and at least 1024x768 pixels resolution you won't see the photos as they are meant to be seen. You will not be able to see any difference between a badly scanned photo and a perfectly scanned shot with high color and DPI settings. This is of critical importance. If you cannot see the difference you will probably not use the best settings on your scanner and your photos will not be looking their best. Ask your local computer guru how to change the setting on your computer.

Hopes this clarifies it a bit for you.

In your local department store, you can find a whole section of towels you can purchase and cry into until you feel better. If, after that, you still feel like posting, try calling your mommy instead, she'll make it all better for you. If you still feel like posting, do us all a favor and don't. You are a guest here. If you do not like it here, you are welcome to go elsewhere, or write your own code and purchase the hardware to make your own site. But if you do create your own site, remember that people will complain about your rules, and it will just annoy you and not inspire you to change your rules.
Geez, I'm not always this pissy, am I?

I'm not attacking Johan, I'm just saying if he deletes too much people will get unhappy.

Does freedom of speach mean something to you ??

Johan should delete almost everything in the trip reports forum as most of the posts there are NOT trip reports but just irrelevant things that don't belong in there.
The trip reports forum is a real mess.

That was a very childish post. I restate what I said earlier, in that if people don't voice their concerns things never improve. That's just the way things work. If this is a good website then Johan would be open to constructive critisism, otherwise what's the point? If you cannot see this, that's too bad.

I totally agree with B737-700. I don't know why people make that mistake, it's not that hard to comprehend.

Recently Uploaded Low Quality Pictures

Thu Jul 26, 2001 9:21 pm

I can’t agree more. There are improvements that need to be made. Here are some photos that have been recently uploaded (this year) that are of low quality or contradict the rules.
Low aesthetic qualities
Subject too far in the distance
Terribly backlit and over sharpened
I'm not sure what to call this...low quality?
Way off center and not sharpened enough
There is a rule against having people in you photo.
This photo is just awful

There’s more. I’m keeping a list, I look thru the new photos everyday.

About the forums, as long as you post in the right forum, I don’t see what the problem is. The admin. does seem way too quick to pull the trigger on posts that criticize. Constructive criticism is a good thing.

Rules, Etc.

Thu Jul 26, 2001 9:40 pm

Think of it this way: you are in Johan's house, and he has the absolute right to set rules, and to administer them, as he deems appropriate.

"Free speech" is an oft-abused term. In the US context (and I know that these same general principles apply in other English Common law countries), the protection of free speech is predominantly a protection from governmental intereference with free speech. Your free speech guarantee is not, of course, a guarantee that you have the "right" to come into someone's home and insult them (regardless of the innocuousness of the content), nor does anyone have the obligation to provide you a forum to publish views with which they do not agree.

To echo Jtb106's point, if you do not like it, exercise your right to stay away. If Johan's policies are so restrictive that the content, interest and balance of the site and its forums are uninteresting, the quantity and quality of traffic to the site will suffer. Frankly, I doubt that this will be a problem, though.

I agree B-OTCH, those pics are terrible. If anyone else uploaded them, they'd all get kicked out. And they're not rare shots either.

First of all, I think this topic should be in the non-aviation. Anyway, I don´t see any reason why a post about Concorde should be deleted. I agree with Joona when he says that there have been some problems with the server and this might be the cause of that deletion.
About this site, it is, in my opinion, the best aviation site with very good pictures and with excellent foruns that I can only describe as full of life. This happens because it has the paticipation of people all around the world with diferent points of view and, above all, diferent cultures. When someone disagrees with any rule, any post, should write about it and tell why he disagrees. No way he should leave the forum. As CX_Flyboy wrote, feedback is the key element for improvement. And no matter how good it is, we can always make it better with a little help from the friends of
Thank you Johan and thank you all.

"free Speech"

Thu Jul 26, 2001 10:47 pm

i dont think free speech is the issue. i agree that thats supposed to protect us against GOVERNMENT control of expression. this is not a government run site, it is private and he can delete what he wants to. "free speech" does not apply here.

however, "monopoly" does apply i believe. you cant simply "go somewhere else". there is not a comprable site. even though this is johans site, the people that frequent it do have some rights. this is a service, which has adverts, and johan is making money off of this, albeit prolly very little. so, i see it as we are "customers". i think being fair and even across the board is not asking for much.
