'Chasing The Sun' - Episode 4 Made Me Sick

Sat Jul 28, 2001 3:32 am

Don't know how many of you saw it, but PBS recently broadcast an excellent 4 part series about the airline industry.

In episode 4 they showed the destruction of a CV-880 (990?) and Frank Lorenzo's face within 5 minutes of each other. I swear I was squirming in my seat.

Actually, the destruction of an airline(r) and Frank Lorenzo kinda go hand in hand, don't they?

In the Twin Cities, they've only gotten to Episode 3 (The Trippe years). It was on last night. It was great to see vintage footage of the 707. Episode 4 is next week. Thanks for the warning.

Yeah, I saw it, too.
I thought the show, and that's the only episode I saw, was the best airliner show I've ever seen. But when they showed the pile of CV-880 scrap, I recognised it from convair880.com and knew what was coming next. When they showed the actual scrapping footage, well....Do you remember in Animal House when the mover drops a case of Jack Daniels and Bluto howls in pain at the sight of it? Well that was me. I was sick about it. If they made a call to get a camera crew out there to film it, they could have given Doug Scroggins a chance to buy some of them for restoration.
What a shame.

So, it's not showing in SF any time soon. Does anyone know where I can get it on video?

TIA

DLX,

Well, they gave the information right after the end of the show, but I'll be damned if I can find anything about it online!

I saw it, too, they DID say copies coulld be purchased but I can't find it either. You might try www.kcet.org. They have a shopping link, but the link to order videos is "coming soon". However, there's an 800 number that you might call - 800-343-4727.

I saw Episode 4 a few days ago. I hadn't heard of Episodes 1, 2, and 3. Were they about commercial aviation also? Could you list the titles so that if they are rerun I'll recognize them?

Thanks.

Bob, check out www.kcte.org. There is a link to the Catching the sun website and that gives a brief syopsis of each episode.

Go figure, the kcte.org site takes you somewhere else...go to www.pbs.org, do a search on "Chasing the Sun" and follow the first link - it takes you to a kcte.org in hollywood. Click on their logo on the bottom and you'll find the site. Don't know why kcte.org takes you to some Kentucky literacy page...

I saw them all.. I thought they were great! Although the TWA 880 being ripped apart and Lorenzo did make me kinda sick and sad. I just wish aviators ran airlines.

The part of the show that made me puke was when they showed the creation of Airbus.

Seeing both Lorenzo and the loader tearing those CV880's apart is bad!!!!1 My jaw dropped when I saw that 880 ripped apart!

The "Chasing the Sun" series was great for the vintage footage and for that reason is worth seeing. However, my praise ends there. The script is VERY melodramatic, as if a compelling story weren't enough to grip the audience. I also had a problem with Episode 3 (the one on the advent of jet travel). Again, great vintage footage, especially of the Comet. However, there was NO mention of non-Western aircraft: the Tu-104 and the Tu-144, both civil aviation pioneers, simply didn't exist. The Avro (Canada) Jetliner was also left out, a major omission. Watch it for the footage but not for the script.

I personally liked the episodes very much. I realised the trouble of sortening the show down to four episodes (understandable fanofjets), you could go on and on about commercial aviation. I'm with the MSP crowd here waiting for the episode four, next week.

To get the videos, I'm sure of the information but the company was Video Finders. They currently are developing a website (saying coming soon) so you might need to call or write them.

I think it has been a pretty good aviation series so far.

Agreed though it does not pay attention to some aircraft types that should have more attention payed to them. But I haven't seen one series that has ever done a decent job of that.

The Convair scene was painful.....The Animal House reaction that was mentioned earlier was about the same as the one I had........

This was a good series, but the BEST, IMHO was a miniseries that was used when "Turner Network Television" got started back in the late 80's. I can't remember the name of it, but it was absolutely one of the best series on aviation I've ever seen. The photography was awesome, especially a scene of an old CO 747 in cruise which was shot from just above and behind with the contrails forming and the pilot (a woman in this case) discussing how a letter from Richard Bach got her started towards a carrier in aviation.
