Virgin Atlantic In Philly?

Sat Jul 28, 2001 6:15 am

There is a rumor that Virgin Atlantic is trying to be in Philadelphia in their new international terminal? What is the latest on this?

I live outside of Philadelphia and haven't heard anything about Virgin and the new Terminal One. I did drive under it when I flew AirTran to PHL last week, it's looking very nice. But anyway, if Virgin came into PHL, then there would be five flights to London daily:
US A330
US A330
BA B744
BA B772

Would that be too many? I'm not sure, I was on the 9:00 BA flight 68 on the 777 and it was full, but it was right after Christmas and my half of my marching band with 100 kids was on it.

I know somone who works in the management office at PHL and yes the rumor is indeed true. However there is a big problem called Bernuda II. All the slot allocations under it are used up. As we all know there have been problems negotiating an openskies between the US and UK.Now that there will soon be an openskies between the US and France, probably within the next few weeks. An openskies between the US and UK can not possibly be too far off. When that is agreed to and signed, look for Virgina Atlantic to start service to PHL immediately followed soon after by service to probably New Orleans.

Living outside of Philly myself...

I think this would be great for spotting, but apparently Bermuda II is screwing it up...I'd love to see VS in PHL...its badly underserved on international flights...it needs more variety...

Virgin to MSY? Upon intial observation, it sounds quite daft, but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The only international carriers that fly out of MSY are Central American airlines, and one currently has to fly to either IAH, DFW, or ATL (which are the closest european gateways) to catch a flight to Europe. Mardi Gras is a plus, but the biggest draw would be the casinos over in Biloxi and Gulfport, only about an hour's drive from MSY. As for future Virgin expansion, I honestly see them taking on Delta and BA on the ATL-LGW (maybe LHR if things work out), and I also see them heading to Mexico also.

As far as I'm aware, Bermuda II only affects flights from Heathrow and so VS could serve any US city they like from Gatwick.

Gatwick is already served twice daily by USAirways, the hometown carrier, with A330's...If VS did serve PHL, it would come from Heathrow to go head-to-head vs. BA

Any new routes to the USA are very unlikely with a downturn in Business Class traffic and a recession looming. The costs involved in a new start up are extremely high with no returns in the short term.

The company are more likely to concentrate on increasing frequencies on existing routes to the USA. New routes being looked into at the moment are to the Middle East and Far East.
