United's 732's

Sat Jul 28, 2001 2:02 pm

Does United plan to replace its aging 727 and 737 fleet with 319 and 320's? I would love to see United pick up a few 738's..

As much as I love the 737, you will not likely see the 738 in United colors. UA is firmly commited to the A320 family.

United is not interested in the A 318 at this moment, according to some of its employees have said to me. And if they are, they would have ordered it to replace its B 732s.

The B 727s will be gone in about 3 years time. But not the B 737-200s! Currently, there is no replacement for it. NOT AT ALL! They have just went through heavy maintenance and will be around for at least 5 years.

It is possible that UAL will order the B 737-600 or the A 318 in the future. As a replacement of the B 737-200s. If not, they may simply get more A 319/320s, and assign their B 733s/735s on routes that are currently flown by B 737-200s.

Hope this helps.  Smile

I think once the US economy improves, expect UA to retire the 737-200's mostly because of the age of the plane and the fact they're not exactly going to meet ICAO Stage III noise standards (hush-kitting them helps but that reduces engine performance, something I don't think UA wants).

I won't be surprised that UA buys about 50 additional A319's and reassign a number of 737-300/500's now flying on the United Shuttle routes on the West Coast to routes now flown by the 732. This means we may see some of the longer United Shuttle routes eventually switched over to the A319 (e.g., SFO-LAS, SFO-SEA).
