PHX Safety Hazard

Sat Jul 28, 2001 11:35 pm

This is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. The local government of Tempe. (abutts Sky Harbor to the east)wants to build this 200 ft tall footbal stadium (NFL Type for our European friends) 1.4 miles off the end of the runway. The FAA ahas declared it a hazard to the safe operation at Sky Harbor. It will effectivly shut down one of the 3 Runways. These idiots (the Stadium Authority) have been saying the hell with the city of Phoenix and Sky Harbor the stadium is more important. It has really raised quite a storm of protest from many groups. Go to for the full report. You wont believe what you read. The Cheif Pilot for WN told the FAA yesterday that over half of thier pilots will refuse to use the effected runway in PHX. HP has made no comment because thier vice president of Public Relations is on the Stadium Board. The pilots union for HP has stated that they also wont use the runway if the stadium is built. This is the most insane thing I have seen in awhile!!

This is extremly insane, no one in their right mind should build a stadium there. The planners of this stadium, should be fired. A few months back, we had a vote, to determine where the stadium, should be. The two choices, were the current one, and a site In the west valley(western part of Phoenix metro area). The latter sight was no where near, any airport in a way that it would effect operations. The land at the second sight, would have also, been free to the stadium builders, but they wanted to be near the airport. Now they've got their wish and as far as I am concerned someone should crash a small plane, on the site and make the city of Tempe, realize what can happen.

Who would go if you have aircraft screaming fulll power 1000ish feet over your head every 3 minutes?

I dont think takeoffs are a big factor, but still, who in their right minds would build something like that so close and directly on the centerline?
I think the airport is using two defenses, the safety issue, and another issue that the stadium is within the 75 decibil noice contour, which was prohibited from being built in a while back.....

The stadium supporters claim that FAA regulations allow an even taller building within that part of the flight path. I don't understand if this is true why a stadium would not fit into FAA regs. If anyone can shed light on this issue, I'd be very interested in hearing more.

Safety is the least of the problems I see. There are airports with buildings closer to the runway than this will be, the one I like is the parking garage at SAN. This has never caused a problem.
What I see happening is that the, ahem, idiots attending football games will complain about the noise. Before you start in on me about this staement, I am not saying that people that go to watch a football game are all idiots. The pint I'm trying to make is that the airport has been where it is for 70 or so years. There are thousands of places to build a football stadium in the PHX area. Most of them better from a fan access than the one chosen.

Posted about this topic last week when it was all over the local news.

Its just another chapter in the age old battle between the City of Tempe and the City of Phoenix. What really pisses me off here is that these two cities, ESPECIALLY Tempe are fucking around with taxpayer money instead of acting responsibly in a manner that is beneficial for the entire region. The City of Tempe needs to come to grips with the fact that they are a landlocked city and that Sky Harbor is just a few miles off of their doorstep. The stadium authority seems to me to be quite brash in their handling of the manner... asserting that the FAA should be able to plan around the stadium.

I think the fact of the matter is that there isn't really a suitable site for the stadium on either side of the Salt River. As much as Tempe wants to develop that area and make it a premire attraction it is going to take a lot of work to move the long-standing industrial fixtures there... (SRP and the APS power plant).

And I don't think sportsfans are not going to enjoy a 737 fly-by every 48 seconds.

Its real simple. The parking garagw in SAN does creat a problem. Its in the way period. But to use the excuse that SAN screwed up thier airport so its ok to build in PHX is totally absurd. Why even take the smallest chance that it will creat a problem. The FAA is very concerened about electro Magnetic interference from all the RF coming from the stadium. Also they believe that it will interfere with the VOR and the glide slope. HELLO DUH!! Oh yea what about the 300 foot cranes during construction? I have 2 friends that fly for WN and they both say that it will effectively render Runway 26/8 (the longest runway at 11,000 Feet)useless. The effective size of the runway will become 6000 feet. Oh well we didnt need that 777 NON stop to London or that A340 flight to Frankfurt. And oh yea Northwest can take 3 or 4 A320's and replace thier winter 747 loads No Prob!!
