Kalitta Air

Sun Jul 29, 2001 9:58 am

Can someone give me some info about this airline called "kalitta Air"? where are they based? Do they do pax or cargo? what other kinds of planes do they operate?

I went over to my local airport yesterday and in the cargo terminal where I usually find an Atlas 747 (or two) I saw a Kalitta Air 747-100. It had windows, so it didn't look like a cargo carrier. I checked the reg. #, N709CK, and I see that Kalitta owns only three 747s worldwide - and it's been photographed on the database from places like Oslo and HK but never in the U.S. - and I got a nice shot of it!

I never heard of them before.

One was at FLL today droping off an engine "CF6-80" for a Delta 767-400 that got FOD'ed. She was here for about 2 hours.

Kallita International Airlines operates as a ACMI cargo carrier, I think that they also operate under the name American International Airways

Kalitta is another name for American International, a cargo company; Kalitta is the name of the founder, Connie Kalitta. The distinctive red-and-gold livery has been applied to the DC-8, 747, and L-1011.

The headquarters for Kalitta Air is at YIP Willowrun Airport by Detroit.

Kalitta Air is different from American International in a way actually although same owner.

Former race car driver Conrad Kalitta formed Kalitta services in I believe the 70s flying Volpar turboliners- turbo Beech 18s. Oh and by the way, his nickname isn't Connie, even though his name is Conrad. His wife's name is Connie.

He got some DC-8s in the 80s and formed American International Airways, later he got 727s and briefly operated DC-9s. In the mid 90s he received 747s and L1011s, he operated both in passenger (charter) and cargo configurations.

Around 1998-1999 he became an investor in Kitty Hawk Corp- parent company to Kitty Hawk Cargo and sold his fleet to them but I believe Kalitta was still the chairman and became another company under Kitty Hawk Corp known as Kitty Hawk International. He repainted some of his DC-8s, 747s and L1011s to a blue and white scheme but many kept the famous red and gold. Kitty Hawk International went belly up and several of the aircraft were parked at YIP.

From what I understand, Kalitta bought the 747s back at half the price he sold them for a couple years ago and formed Kalitta Air. Kalitta is supposed to receive 4 727s also.

Keep in mind, this whole time Kalitta Air Services aka Connie Kalitta Services was in constant operation at YIP on small cargo and charter operations using his Volpar turboliners, learjets, Falcon jets and Mitsubishi MU-2s
