Boarding

Thu Jun 17, 1999 9:19 am

I noticed when I was looking through the Cabin Views section that there were photographs of different airline interiors by the same photographer on the same day. Will airlines let you board the aircraft just to take pictures? Even when you are not flying on that plane? The airlines claim you cant go inside the plane without a ticket for "Security Reasons" But if you have been through Security you are fine. What do you think?

It's an FAA regulation that no one except ticketed passengers or individuals with an airline-specific employee/security pass for the airport may board an aircraft parked at the gate. As for the pictures you've seen which have been taken on the same day by the same person, etc., some gate agents might be a little bit more, er, "tolerant" than others. It all depends on the gate agent, as that's the individual who would ultimately approve it or turn you away, as the law requires. Couldn't hurt to ask, at any rate...

It depends on the gate agent, and the airport. At major cities and hubs (LAX, SFO, etc.) I have yet to board a plane without a ticket, however, at smaller, less busy stations such as Sacramento, gate agents will escort you onto the plane if they have nothing else to do. This goes for taking pics on the tarmac, as well.

Tarmac Visits?

How do you go about asking to go onto the tarmac to look/take pictures?

I was over at Sac Int'l taking pics for a photog. class...I just asked an America West gate agent, and he made a quick call, and PRESTO!! I was down on the tarmac! (he called the County Airports' office...about one block away) The County Apts. office said yea...no security threat, especially in SMF!
