The USAF will need a tanker aircraft to replace the 40 year-old KC-135 fleet. We are talking about a 400-600 aircraft market here alone, I note the bottom image is in RAF markings, that's probably wishful thinking.
Remember how the KC-135 (the original B717), gave such a boost to the 707 programme? History could repeat itself if LM went for this aircraft, if LM want to get back into the civil market. Maybe with a tie-up with Airbus?
IMHO they should move to set up such a consortium to develop and produce this class of aircraft for service post 2010, but in the meantime the earliest KC-135's should be replaced by KC-767's, perhaps a 100 or so aircraft.
